(More customer reviews)This book is about two sisters, Delia and her older sister Pearl. Their mother died when Pearl was very young. While Pearl is still having trouble dealing with the death of her mother, their father deals with it by avoiding talking about her, and Delia dives into ballet. Her new teacher is very strict and warns all her girls about being fat. While Delia gets better at dance, she also starts to starve herself and does nothing but dance. Pearl meanwhile withdraws from her family becoming rebellious and failing school. This story is as much about dance as it is about the survival of a broken family. This is a very good book that slightly older children will enjoy and even learn from. I recommend it to all who like books about ballet, dealing with family issues and growing into an adult.

Little Ballerina Review

(More customer reviews)What a great book. I bought it to read to my 4 year old daughter after seeing The Nutcracker Ballet & this book far exceeded my hopes. It was very fun for my daughter to open an envelope on each page with cute little notes in each (some from the Sugar Plum Fairy!). It clearly conveys the message that if you believe in your self, you can achieve anything. And at the end, it really hit it out of the park when the final little note card included a ballet charm bracelet!
I just loved it & so did my daughter. I want to order it for all the little girls we know. It's a fun one.

(More customer reviews)Elizabeth Koda-Callan is a designer, illustrator, and best-selling children's book author. She lives in New York City with her cat named Cinnamon. She has beautifully illustrated a story of a little girl who's dream comes true. On the front cover, a silver cat charm is worn on a silver chain by "the little girl." This charm is real and can be removed.
My nieces have two adorable kittens and we all love cats, so we enjoy reading books about cats, cats and more cats. I found this book was an excellent way to teach young girls the responsibility of taking care of a cat or kittens.
"The little girl" in the story is given the responsibility of looking after her neighbours cat. Soon she learns that cats don't come when called. She has to develop a certain degree of patience in order to wait for the silver tabby named Clover to learn to like her. She discovers that cats love to chase things and soon she and Clover are the best of friends.
At the end of the story, "the little girl" finds that her patience pays off. When she returns to see Clover and bring her a gift, Clover in fact has a gift for "the little girl." I loved this book because it teaches and entertains.

This book tells the story of a little girl who loved to dance, but never put her whole heart into it, until one day when the right motivation came along. In her class, they were to have a recital. This made the little girl glow with excitement. When she learned that the best ballerina in the class would be rewarded with being able to be the "Prima Ballerina." For the following weeks up until the recital, the little girl practiced and practiced, trying to perfect her ballet. While her friends did lived thier normal every day lives, the little girl stayed inside and worked extrememly hard. Sometimes the little girl would get down because of how long it was taking to get it right, so her mother got her a pair of silver slippers to hang around her neck. Every time the little girl danced, she wore the slippers as a reminder of the hard work she had done. When the time came to find out who the "Prima ballerina" was, the little girl became very nervous. But not for long, as she found out she got to be the star of the recital. The night came and as the girl got nervous, she looked at the slippers around her neck and took a step out on stage. Her performance was flawless. A true reward for her hard work. This book shows the determination of one little girl, and the reward she got from hard work. It is the perfect book for a bit of encouragement and motivation. Every child should have a copy of "The Silver Slippers."

Amazing Grace (Reading Rainbow Book) Review

(More customer reviews)A child's imagination is one of the purest forms of expression. Author Hoffman has captured that innocence in this superb tale. Grace, like so many youngsters, spends much of her day in the pleasures of "acting out" the characters that populate the pages of the books she reads. She feels that she can do and be anything that she desires. The theme of pursuing one's dreams is the type of message to which all can relate.
As one turns the pages of this beautifully illustrated book, one can enjoy the little girl's imaginary adventures. When Grace learns of the part in "Peter Pan," the reader is able to identify with this as a part of school life. The illustrator has also balanced the classroom with children of varied ethnic and racial backgrounds. This is a plus in the age of being "politically correct."
The language of the book is reflective with the age of the intended reading audience. With a little adult help, the average primary child will "read" this one with great relish.
The resolve of the adults in the family to encourage Grace in pursuit of her dreams is refreshing. Most of us let barriers prevent us from doing the same.
This is one great children's book!
