1) Stan is hilarious and truly going nowhere faster than anyone I know.
2) Stan's precise descriptions of Ellen make her oh so edible.
3) It's amazing how in touch Beaudoin is with his adolescence.
4) Does there really need to be a 4 when the next step is buying this book?

Ghost Boy Review

Ghost Boy, by Iain Lawrence, is the story of an albino boy named Harold. An albino lacks coloring matter in the skin, hair, and eyes, and so is very white in appearance. Harold lives as an outcast for the first part of his life, until he runs away to the circus. He is adopted by Princess Minikin and Fossil Man. For the first time, he begins to feel accepted by others. He meets another albino, the Cannibal King. He falls in love with Flip. Harold even teaches the elephants in the show to play baseball. But Harold finds that even here, there are the "freaks" and the others that are considered normal, and he is confused as to which group he belongs.Ghost Boy is an unforgettable book that entertained as well as captured my attention. I give it five stars and highly recommend it. It was an interesting book that held many emotions, including sadness, happiness, mysteriousness, suspense, humor, and anger. Ghost Boy helped me to understand the struggles and pain of those who feel they are different

The Well-Educated Mind: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had Review

The Well-Educated Mind: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had

I typically buy 75-100 books a year through Amazon[.com] and spend hours and hours reading reviews before I ultimately make my purchase. When I [got]Bauer's book, I just couldn't put it down. Not only does she lay out in detail the necessary steps in developing an appreciation and understanding for the "Great Books of Civilization" she actually shows you how to do it and gives you an abundant of resources to aid you if you need more help. Not since Mortimer Adler's book "How to Read a Book" have I ever come across such a lucid approach to raising one's awareness of the world's greatest writers.

In addition to laying out the groundwork for setting up a self-study program, Bauer provides a detailed approach to each of her recommended readings, from "The Epic of Gilgamesh, c. 2000 B.C. to Elie Wiesel's "All Rivers Run to the Sea", 1995.

A warning however for the "undisciplined mind". Unless you are prepared to commit the necessary time (Bauer recommends 30 minutes a day, 4 days a week) to do some "really serious reading" using a personalized "commonplace book" (which she describes in detail) to record your learnings and critiques -- you are wasting your time. It's akin to losing 25 pounds through disciplined dieting or getting out of debt in 12 months through focused efforts. You either commit yourself to a life-long learning plan to raise your consciousness and self-awarness or simply go back and waste away by watching T.V. and munching on your doritos. The choice is yours.

The Silenced Review

The Silenced

I picked up this newly released book yesterday with the intention of reviewing it as a possibility for an eighth grade English class. As a teacher I used Mr. DeVita's earlier novel "Blue" for a school wide project at an arts Middle School in Wisconsin. My skimming review of the book for school use turned into a 12 hour addiction. Couldn't put it down! My teenage children and husband are fighting over whose turn it is to read. I can't recommend this book more highly. Not only is it an exciting fictional offshoot of three actual unsung heroes of the holocaust, reminiscent of Number the Stars, but an inspiring tale of activism in the face of overwhelming odds. The words "people deserve the government they're willing to tolerate" keeps ringing in my head. My students will be reading this in the fall, and I know it will spur on many historical and political discussions. This book is not only entertaining for all ages, but like every great novel, it makes one think about our responsibility in the world, and the courage it sometimes takes to fulfill that responsibility. You won't be able to put it down!

Toad Catchers' Creek: Children's Empowerment Series (Children's Empowerment) Review

Toad Catchers' Creek: Children's Empowerment Series (Children's Empowerment)

When I first received my copy of "Toad Catchers Creek" I decided to read it on my own before subjecting any nieces or nephews to a story I was unfamiliar with. I was pleased to find a story that I not only felt comfortable, but obligated to, share with them.
The lessons of this short story are invaluable and should make their way to all young people. As our the world around us grows ever more complex and attention spans are tested at every turn, a story such as this, with simple, universal truths -can add to strengthening a child's self image and confidence.
I strongly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a brightly illustrated fun to read children's book that is not only entertaining, but educational and empowering as well.
