Nonsense He Yelled Review

Nonsense He Yelled

OK, I am confused. Do the "professional" reviewers not have kids? My daughter loved this book. We read it often (no offense to the author, I can't read any book every night and stay sane). She loves the rhymes and then we of course start a silly game where we have to make up a rhyme with her or her friends names. This is truely my only complaint. Have you ever tried to rhyme Jessica or Jacqueline!? Anyway, this book is a great vehicle for immagination. My daughters kindergarden class all made up rhymes for their names because of it. I really think the reviewers are out of touch with what kids like. Of course, how many times have you seen a movie that you and everyone you know loved, but the critics hated. Anyway, trust the kids, the book is great!

The Best Part of Me: Children Talk About their Bodies in Pictures and Words Review

The Best Part of Me: Children Talk About their Bodies in Pictures and Words

Immediate, poetic & bright this big book brings you up close & personal with children's feet, hands, eyes, backs, hair, elbows in award-winning Wendy Ewald's magical photos.
The poems penned by these 15 youngsters are funny & eloquent, touching & proud. As is usual with children, it's more about what they don't say as much as it is about what they do.
Bound to get kids thinking about what they like about their bodies, might even get them writing little ditties about it too! A must in a classroom or school library!
The poems & black & white photos in THE BEST PART OF ME are drawn from Literacy Through Photography, a program Wendy Ewald originated in the public schools of Durham, North Carolina.

The Man Who Lived Alone Review

The Man Who Lived Alone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love four things about this book. First, this great contemporary poet wrote it. It also reminds me of Fisherman Simms, a book from my childhood featuring a similar character and pastoral setting. I love the simple but elegant black and white pen and ink illustrations.
I also love the story. The nameless man built a camp on Ragged Mountain and lived alone collecting things, thousands of rusty nails, deer pelts, old newspapers and clocks, and "wasps nests hanging from railroad spike." He built a shed for his mule, who does have a name--Old Beauty. He survived a terrible childhood, a house fire, and when he was 14 left home and tramped around until he returned home to visit his cousins, who made a few years of his youth happy. He liked eating vegetables because "that is what the woodchuck ate." He made friends with an owl named Grover Cleveland. He worked as a carpenter and could do everything else too.
Not much happens here. But this story offers an intense tranquility that others lack. In our harried age, children need this kind of peace. Alyssa A. Lappen

Me I Am Review

Me I Am

Prelutsky, Jack, Me I Am!, FSG, 2007, 1983
Prelutsky's classic poem, entitled ME I AM (c1983) celebrates self-esteem, "no other ME I AM can fit precisely in my skin" and is brought to life in a splendid pairing with Christine Davenier's lively illustrations that portray three children in animated movement: leaping, jumping, riding a bike, ballet dancing and many other effervescent or thoughtful activities. The excitement of each individual "Me" as they go about their daily activities is created out of numerous little vignettes that thoughtfully interpret the simple yet powerful text: a boy finds a bird that has fallen out of a nest, and rescues and cares for it, (presumably, the mother has rejected her baby after it was first put back in the nest.) His room is filled with animals, plants, and science books, A young girl is roller skating, she falls down, but then triumphantly picks herself up to skate some more, and a brown-faced girl is ballet dancing both in her room and in her imagination. The three children converge in a final double spread when they join many more children hanging from the word ME! There are many blond or red haired children but few clearly visible representations of other cultures on the inside pages, although the cover definitely suggests a more multicultural cast of children; Nevertheless, all of them are clearly bursting with action and glee. There is so much going on that children will listen to the poem and then likely want to pour over the colorful exuberant illustrations.

Marsupial Sue Book and CD Review

Marsupial Sue Book and CD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Poor Marsupial Sue, she just hates being a kangaroo. All that hopping around gives her a backache, headache, sideache and even a tummyache, so she sets out to try and be something else. The life of a Koala looked good, until she fell out of the tree and living by the sea as a Platypus seemed nice, until she got sick eating all that seafood. She'd just have to try something else. Just then she sees a Wallaby. He looked a lot like Sue, only smaller and was having such a great time bouncing and flouncing and jouncing along, that she just had to join him and it was fun. So Sue learned the most important lesson of all: "Be happy with who you are./Don't ever stray to far from you./Get rid of that frown/And waltz up and down/beneath a marsupial star./If you're a kangaroo through and through,/Just do what kangaroos do."..... John Lithgow has written a silly, funny, joyous song and picture book, with a gentle message, that will delight youngsters with it's bouncy energy and lilting rhyme. His humorous text is complemented by Jack Davis' bold, bright and expressive artwork, full of charming detail and kids and adults alike will giggle as they watch Australia's sunglassed, hat wearing, Birkenstocked denizens do their thing. Complete with sheet music and CD, Marsupial Sue is perfect for youngsters 3-7 and is a book the entire family will enjoy reading and singing together and with its catchy waltzing rhythm, even dancing, too.

Imogene's Last Stand Review

Imogene's Last Stand

My 8 year old son and I just love this book. We've read it twice now and will be reading it again. Imogene is a determined patriot, whose love of history leads her to do amazing things. We particularly enjoyed the quotes she uses from famous people in history and were excited to read more about those characters. This book is one you need in your library. Every person, of every age can read it and enjoy it, because in the immortal words of my son, "Wouldn't it be great if everyone had at least a little Imogene in them?" Indeed it would. Bravo!

Keisha Ann Can Review

Keisha Ann is irrepressible as she goes through her school day. Whether it's doing her work or doing what's fun, she let's nothing stand in her way. Who can do it? Keisha Ann Can!
This is a fun little book, with nice illustrations of children going through their school day. It teaches kids about politeness and obedience and that school can be fun. And most of all, it teaches kids to have a can-do attitude. This is a very nice book with a great lesson. My four-year-old and I highly recommend it!
