The Unwavering Resolve of Jonathan Edwards (Long Line of Godly Men Profile) Review

Steven J. Lawson was unknown to me until about 2 years ago. I then heard a message he preached at MacArthur's Pastor's Conference. Since that time I've picked up a few of his books. I have finished a couple of them and enjoyed them. That being so, when I read that he had written a book about Jonathan Edwards I knew that I wanted to read it.
This book is the second in a series titled The Long Line of
Godly Men Profiles. The first volume being The Expository Genius of
John Calvin.
From the beginning, as soon as one reads the table of contents, it is obvious that Lawson is convinced that Edwards' resolve was the result of his Biblical convictions. Indeed, in the preface, Lawson says "Godliness is a lifelong study..." And again, "Here is the key to his spiritual growth--Edwards disciplined himself for the purpose of godliness." The emphasis of the book is Edwards' pursuit of holiness through his resolutions, and use him as an example to prod us to walk in the same pursuit of holiness.
Lawson begins with a chapter that chronicle the high points of Edwards' life. From there he proceeds to show us how Edwards maintained his resolve to wholly follow Christ even in the most difficult of times.
Next, Lawson takes us to the time of Edwards' making his resolutions and writing his personal narrative. He points us to the background and influences that promoted his pursuit of holiness and led Edwards in this direction. This then leads us to learn the distinctive features of his resolutions, which features ultimately show the heart of one who has purposed to be godly by the grace of God. We are then directed to his personal narrative which again shows that his heart, through all of his life, was the heart of one who was pursuing God with an "all out" passion.
As we continue in the book Lawson points out that which is extremely important to us all; the fact that personal holiness requires faith. Edward's resolutions were not simply moral rules, or a guide to self-reformation. They were only possible through faith in Christ. To this end Edwards not only refused to rely upon himself, but trusted Christ to empower him to perform these resolutions. He also realized the tendency to stray, so he regularly reviewed his resolutions and his adherence to them that he might recognize his failures, correct them, and better glorify God.
The glory of God in everything was the goal of Edwards' life, Lawson tells us. "Edwards wrote:
`1. Resolved, that I will do whatsoever I think to be
most to God's glory, and my own good, profit and
pleasure, in the whole of my duration, without any
consideration of the time, whether now, or never so
many myriads of ages hence. Resolved to do whatever
I think to be my duty, and most for the good and
advantage of mankind in general. Resolved to do this,
whatever difficulties I meet with, how many and how
great soever.'"
Glorifying God was Edwards' passion, and this passion is manifest throughout his resolutions and personal narrative. This passion called for frequent self-examination, just as it will for you and for me.
To avoid giving away the whole book, let it suffice us to say that the following chapters deal with Edwards' means of pursuing the glory of God in personal holiness.
Finally, it must be said that this book is well written, well researched, and well done. The average reader who is seeking a biography of Edwards may do well to look elsewhere. The purpose of this book is to lead the reader to look into the heart of Edwards so that we might learn what made him tick. Neither is this book written simply to entertain. This book was written for the purpose of being a blessing to those who want to walk closer to the Lord Jesus Christ. It is not to be read casually, though it is easy to read. It is to be read with ones "thinking cap on" so that the reader can gain benefit from the observation of a life lived unto the glory of God.

To present an example of intentional, faithful, and passionate Christian living, Dr. Steven J. Lawson paints a portrait of eighteenth-century pastor and theologian Jonathan Edwards, who structured his relationship with God by composing and following seventy heart-searching resolutions. The ultimate goal of this book is to challenge a new generation of believers to pursue holiness in their daily lives. Steven J. Lawson Edwards, often remembered for his sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, is revealed here as a man with a heart for God s glory above all things. To help himself pursue that goal, he composed a set of resolutions to guide his conduct in all areas, from his battle against sin to his use of time. In Edwards singleminded pursuit of God, Dr. Lawson sees an unparalleled example for modern Christians.

When Souls Had Wings: Pre-Mortal Existence in Western Thought Review

When Souls Had Wings: Pre-Mortal Existence in Western Thought

This is a subject that I have always been interested in. I am LDS and was aware that we were one of the few western religions that believe in a pre-existence. I also knew that Plato and a few early Christians such as Origen believed in the concept. I was not aware of the many others that believed in pre-existence and the diversity of views that it entailed. This book has exceeded my expectations and made me aware of many other schools of thought on the subject.
Givens has a very impressive resume and is professor of Literature and Religion at the University of Richmond. He has done an extensive study of the subject of pre-mortal existence and the results are condensed into this book. Here he covers religion, philosophy, and poetry that cover this subject.
The book covers from Mesopotamian times to modern times. Highlights include Hebrew traditions, Plato, Gnosticism, Origen, Augustine, the Kabbalah, and the Cambridge Platonists. Philosophers that tackled this subject include Descartes, Leibniz, and Kant. In 19th century religion major players were Wilhelm Benecke, Joseph Smith, Edward Beecher and Julius Muller. Poets that covered the subject include Blake, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Shelley, Byron, Lermontov, Carlyle, and Goethe.
His final chapter is more philosophical and discusses the views of Jung and others and how the idea pre-existence can solve many philosophical and religious problems. He notes that this paradigm never succumbed to philosophical or scientific critique. It has great explanatory power, but did not fit in with the western idea of creation out of nothing and that fact that God is the only eternal being.
This book is a must for anyone interested in the idea of a pre-existence. Givens explores the religious, poetic, and philosophical implications of this belief and for someone like myself who loves theology and philosophy was a wonderful exercise in thought.

The idea of the pre-existence of the soul has been extremely important, widespread, and persistent throughout Western history--from even before the philosophy of Plato to the poetry of Robert Frost. When Souls Had Wings offers the first systematic history of this little explored feature of Western culture. Terryl Givens describes the tradition of pre-existence as "pre-heaven"--the place where unborn souls wait until they descend to earth to be born. And typically it is seen as a descent--a falling away from a happier and untroubled state into the turbulent and sinful world we know. The title of the book refers to the idea put forward in antiquity that our souls begin with wings, and that only after shedding those wings do we fall to earth. The book not only traces the history of the idea of pre-existence, but also captures its meaning for those who have embraced it. Givens describes how pre-existence has been invoked to explain "the better angels of our nature," including the human yearning for transcendence and the sublime. Pre-existence has been said to account for why we know what we should not know, whether in the form of a Greek slave's grasp of mathematics, the moral sense common to humanity, or the human ability to recognize universals. The belief has explained human bonds that seem to have their own mysterious prehistory, salved the wounded sensibility of a host of thinkers who could not otherwise account for the unevenly distributed pain and suffering that are humanity's common lot, and has been posited by philosophers and theologians alike to salvage the principle of human freedom and accountability. When Souls had Wings underscores how durable (and controversial) this idea has been throughout the history of Western thought, the theological dangers it has represented, and how prominently it has featured in poetry, literature, and art.

Practicing Greatness: 7 Disciplines of Extraordinary Spiritual Leaders (Jossey-Bass Leadership Network Series) Review

Practicing Greatness: 7 Disciplines of Extraordinary Spiritual Leaders (Jossey-Bass Leadership Network Series)

If the intention of Dr. McNeal was to cause the reader of this book to reflect and evaluate his/her life inwardly and to feel compelled to advance in the disciplines elaborated in this book, then, he succeeded in my case.
I feel that the author has written with wisdom and maturity on a critically important facet of leadership, especially "spiritual" leadership. The disciplines of "self" outlined in this book have been overlooked for too long, making this work much needed and timely for those who realize that today's leadership is in need of reformation. McNeal makes his case with both positive and negative examples in each chapter, writing from his vast experience, and with a sense of having developed these disciplines in his own life.
If you are a leader, or an aspiring leader, please make this book a priority to read. It will certainly make a great contribution to your thinking, and to the formation of "great" leadership in your life. In my opinion, these disciplines are not optional, they are ESSENTIAL.
This is definitely an excellent treatment of the greatest leadership challenge you will ever face - leading your self! Let's face it, you will only be successful at leading others to the degree that you have learned to lead your self.

The Book Run for Your Life is a really interesting book. I picked the book because the cover of the book looked interesting. When I first started reading the book I didnt think I was going to like it but I kept reading it and it got very interesting.
This book is about a girl named Kisha. Kisha is growing up in the projects. She lives in Oakland, CA. Kisha has started running track at the community center for a man named Darren who is her coach. She is on the team with her best friends Notonia, Jennifer, Ester, Shanika and Malika. Kisha spends most of her time at the community center. She lives with her mother, brother and her father. Kisha is going through a lot of problems at home with her parents. She finds out that her friends on the track team have similar problems with their parents.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that is going through a lot of problems with their parents at home.I would rate this book as a 10. In this book I like the way the author writes exactly how a child would speak.
Run for Your Life is really a great book. It could help most teens with thier problems at home.
