The diversity, originality, and volume of content written by our founding fathers is really heartening. The subject they wrote on were the teething concerns of their days, and touched upon all facets such as freedom, social justice, caste, gender, and India's standing /role in the world. Seems like a whole lot of original and revolutionary thinker-politicians came together in those days, and we have stopped producing the breed of original thinker-politicians.
Just the 4 great men- Jawaharlal Nehru, M.K. Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar and Rabindranath Tagore have wrote close to 50, 000 volumes on diverse topics.
If only the petty contemporary politicians who claim to be followers of these great men & women had read the writings/speeches of these great people. When Guha introduces, he writes, "The tradition that this book has showcased is dead. No politician now alive can think or write in an original way or even interesting fashion about the direction Indian society and politics is or should be taking."
In this book, Ramachandra Guha has introduced and edited writing (and speeches) of 19 men and women, who he thinks were the makers of modern India. There are a few surprising additions, and a few omissions. Without delving into why there were a few added or deleted from this list, we can look at the heterogeneity of the their thoughts and their views on causes close to them.
The book shows the diversity and originality of thought, the "argumentative" or debating nature of these men/women, and a compendium of ideas on wide variety of subjects.
Guha has tried to tie the book together with his introduction and editions, but still this is a collection rather than one cohesive, flowing tome.
The book starts with Rammohun Roy- a modernist way ahead of his time, who wrote about freedom, social justice, and educational reforms and goes on to Syed Ahmed Khan- the founder of Aligarh Muslim university. Jotirao Phule talks about rural poverty and caste inequalities while Hamid Dalwai writes about the extremism in both Hindus and Muslims .
There are the radicals, the rightists, the leftists, the early capitalists, and the feminists.
It off course, covers the social and reforming ideas of Gandhi. Some speeches and writings by Ambedkar and Gandhi has been put across in a debating fashion making for a great read.

Human Change Processes: The Scientific Foundations of Psychotherapy Review

Human Change Processes: The Scientific Foundations of Psychotherapy

Mahoney has written a comprehensive overview of the cognitive revolution in psychology -- at the very least. He provides clear timelines of philosophical, theoretical, and empirical events that put this complex history in clear context. The writing is "thick" while managing to be accessible to even a beginner (if highly motivated) who is trying to make sense of the complexities of the field of cognitive psychology. He goes on to develop a rationale for the development of what is now known as cognitive constructivism -- of which he is a seminal thinker. His rationale and theory development are logical, well constructed, heavily referenced, and inspired. After laying the historical, theoretical, and empirical groundwork, Mahoney provides examples of how this theory is applied to clinical practice. This work is a gem. It is truly worth the energy and investment necessary to read and absorb it.

The mystery of how, when, and why people change lies at the heart of the therapy process. Many authors have given shape to different pieces of the puzzle. Here at last is a book that provides the integrative framework within which these pieces can fit together. Why is it so difficult for people to change? What can be done to maximize the chances for success? To answer these questions, this sweeping book travels across a vast intellectual terrain, encompassing the history of ideas about human nature, developments in the cognitive sciences, artificial intelligence, evolution, psychobiology, developmental psychology, theories of emotion, the psychology of self, and more. The author then applies the theory to practice, drawing on his wide personal experience with hundreds of clients "in transition" to outline a model of significant change. Mahoney identifies common themes and experience patterns associated with dramatic change, emphasizing the role of emotionality and cognitive processes, and challenging long-revered notions about thinking and feeling. Here is an important work that will point researchers in new directions, will help practicing therapists adapt theoretical concepts to helping patients change, and will make fascinating reading for anyone exploring his or her own life journey.

The Human Equation: Building Profits by Putting People First Review

The Human Equation: Building Profits by Putting People First

The premise of Pfeffer's book is that companies' success is directly correlated to the quality of people and their management. This seems like common sense. After all, many companies proclaim "people are our biggest asset." In practice, however, it's uncommon sense: companies often lack the deep conviction necessary to follow through. It's much easier to take a "tough love" approach to "management," cut training and lay off 10% of the workforce than it is to focus on the long-term people issue.
Based on his research, Pfeffer offers several HR practices that are common in effective organizations. Among them:
* Maintain a sense of employment security. Psychologically speaking, people will work more effectively when they can focus on doing their job rather than worrying about keeping it. Similarly, if employees are your company's hugest asset, then it behooves you to ensure they're not working for your competition. This is common sense.More companies practice uncommon sense and get sucked into the peformance death-spiral. For example, we frequently read where a new CEO is brought in and his first action is to initiate layoffs. (Apple Computer is an often-cited case study of this.)With their sense of security threatened, the remaining employees will become less motivated. Profits begin to sag, so the company reacts by cutting training. Employees may have more accidents, and customer service is affected. The spiral continues until it or the company broken.
* Hire selectively - a recurring theme is that to avoid layoffs, you need to be operating efficiently enough not to *have* extra employees.
In a perfect world, we would have a large number of applicants, screen them based on corporate fit and their attitude, then filter them out through several rounds of screening. Senior staff should become involved in the latter part of the process to emphasize the importance of hiring. After hiring, we need to evaluate the success of our hiring practices and adjust them as necessary. This follows the axiom "that which gets measured, gets done." This common sense approach is used by highly successful companies such as Southwest Airlines and Cisco.Companies exhibiting "uncommon sense" may get so desperate to fill the position that they go against their own guidelines. Having made this mistake before, I am very much aware that a bad hire is far worse thanno hire.
* Facilitate ownership and responsibility through decentralized decision making.
Assuming you hire the "best and brightest," you should trust them to use their brains. This provides a sense of ownership, challenge, andsupports the organization's organic development. We all hope to have the equivalent of the "Post-It" note developed internally by folks taking initiative.
Pfeffer had an interesting comment from Bill Gurley about the effectiveness of stock options. Specifically, they're not really as much a sense of ownership as we'd like to believe because if the market has a violentdownswing (as it did in early 2000), employees are almost incented to leave their underwater options.
-
Pfeffer's book is an evolution of his previous ideas. What's also interesting in his analysis was seeing that long-term company success was *not* correlated to technology or industry.
Pfeffer's suggestions seem like common sense, but Pfeffer realizes they're not AND is aware of the need to quantify the information. The case studies and quantitative research are very helpful in supporting these ideas. In a few of the cases -- Lincoln Electric springs to mind -- it would be especially helpful to have a more recent examination, perhaps a follow-up.

A Life Worth Living brings together the latest thought on Positive Psychology from an international cast of scholars. It includes historical, philosophical, and empirical reviews of what psychologists have found to matter for personal happiness and well-being. The contributions to this volume agree on priciples of optimal development that start from purely material and selfish concerns, but then lead to ever broader circles of responsibility embracing the goals of others and the well-being of the environment; on the importance of spirituality; on the development of strengths specific to the individual. Rather than material success, popularity, or power, the investigations reported in this volume suggest that personally constructed goals, intrinsic motivation, and a sense of autonomy are much more important. The chapters indicate that hardship and suffering do not necessarily make us unhappy, and they suggest therapeutical implications for improving the quality of life. Specific topics covered include the formation of optimal childhood values and habits as well as a new perspective on aging. This volume provides a powerful counterpoint to a mistakenly reductionist psychology. They show that subjective experience can be studied scientifically and measured accurately. They highlight the potentiality for autonomy and freedom that is among the most precious elements of the human condition. MOreover, they make a convincing case for the importance of subjective phenomena, which often affect happiness more than external, material conditions. After long decades during which psychologists seemed to have forgotten that misery is not the only option, the blossoming of Positive Psychology promises a better understanding of what a vigorous, meaningful life may consist of.

Prayers on My Pillow: Inspiration for Girls on the Threshold of Change Review

Prayers on My Pillow: Inspiration for Girls on the Threshold of Change

I bought this book for my daughter who is 15 for Christmas. I started reading it and decided to give it to her immediately. Then I went out and bought five more copies for every teenage girl I knew. I can't describe what happens when you read this book of prayers. The prayers are like poems. They are all about having self confidence and courage and faith in yourself and in God. But the best part about these prayers is how they make you feel after you read one. It's as if the author words enter your heart and fill it with love. My daughter thanked me for this book three times. Buy this book for every woman and girl you know. Their lives and you will be the better for it.

For the Fame of God's Name: Essays in Honor of John Piper Review

For the Fame of God's Name: Essays in Honor of John Piper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can vividly recall the very first time I picked up and read a book by John Piper. Now, over 20 years later I join the contributors to this great new book in honoring the man who's probably taught me more about what it means to worship and enjoy God more than any other person.
The contributors to this over 500 page book reads like a theological all-star list .. D.A. Carson, Sinclair Ferguson, Wayne Grudem, John MacArthur, and Mark Talbot just to name a few.
Also contributing are a few pastors on staff at Bethlehem Baptist, where Piper has served now for 30 years. David Michael, one of those pastors, has an early contribution and indeed, sets the tone early in the book where he writes a four page prayer in chapter one, thanking God for the numerous blessings Piper's ministry has had on him and countless others.
The book covers a variety of topics, including marriage, God's sovereignty, abortion, money, pastoral ministry, marriage, and prayer.
Fittingly, maybe the best chapter in the entire book is Chapter 4, CHRISTIAN HEDONISM by Sam Storms. The phrase is perhaps the most well known and associated with Piper. Storms does a brilliant job of explaining how we delight in and savor what we treasure, and how God is in fact the greatest treasure we have.
Take your time and savor this book.. and then treat yourself with a copy under the Christmas tree.

This tribute to John Piper compiles essays from colleagues written on important themes of his ministry.

John Piper has had a profound impact on countless men and women over his nearly thirty years of ministry. From his online ministry with Desiring God to his preaching ministry at Bethlehem Baptist to his writing ministry in over thirty books, his faithful service has encouraged and challenged many with God's Word.

Piper's influence does not stem from his own abilities and accomplishments, but finds its source in his consistent and humble leading of others to Scripture, where the breathtaking glory of God is displayed in all its wonder. We rejoice and are changed as we encounter glorious truths about God in Piper's ministry.

It is in this spirit that friends and colleagues of Piper, including Wayne Grudem, D. A. Carson, Randy Alcorn, and others, honor him by presenting essays covering topics central to his ministry: prayer, the sovereignty of God, justification, Jonathan Edwards, Christian Hedonism, and more.

Pastors, scholars, and lay leaders will benefit from this tribute to a man who has labored so faithfully for the fame of God's name.

Principles and Practice of Sex Therapy, Fourth Edition (Principles & Practice of Sex Therapy) Review

Principles and Practice of Sex Therapy, Fourth Edition (Principles and Practice of Sex Therapy)
Average Reviews:

I am a Ph.D. student in a marriage and family therapy program. This book was assigned by the professor of my sex therapy class. It is clinical and in some aspects 'over my head' with medical information. But it is well written and provides excellent information on various sexual related disorders and dysfunctions. The information will serve me well in my future work with clients.
