Procrastination and Blocking Review

Procrastination and Blocking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge fan of Robert Boice and believe that his thoughts about how to overcome procrastination and writer's block are seminal. He is one of the few people who has done research on how to help people overcome procrastination and increase their scholarly productivity.
However, unless you are (like me) a Boice addict, I would suggest starting with his other works -- especially "Professors as Writers" and "Advice to New Faculty Members". Most of his books are quite repetitive and rather plodding -- but his ideas are life-changing.
I'm a clinical psychologist and professional coach and I use his theories and interventions all the time when I counsel students, faculty and fiction writers.

The Secret to Life Transformation: How to Claim Your Destiny Now Review

The Secret to Life Transformation: How to Claim Your Destiny Now
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In my opinion, The Secret to Life Transformation does not fulfill its promise of delivering the secret to life transformation. For that matter I do not believe it offers any real new insights into life transformation.
The book is actually a collection of essays by 12 very diverse but somewhat famous people. Most of the authors were well known in their field but certainly not household names.
Because the book is a collection of writings by different authors, it does not have a consistent voice. The lessons presented in each essay do not drive toward a common method for transformation. The theme is very loosely connected. While each attempts to tell how they transformed their lives, there is no system or step by step process for others to follow. There are some nuggets of wisdom scattered throughout the book.
Some of the essays are fairly interesting. It is always interesting to learn how a person rose to the top against some steep odds. But what I was looking more for guiding principles rather than the widely varied stories.
A high percentage of the stories have a significant religious foundation. Some people may object to the strong religious leanings.
Judge Sol Wachter takes a bit of a detour discussing the criminal justice system's handing of mentally disturbed inmates. While there is no denying the huge social problem and the fact that it is inadequately handled, I felt this veered off course. It created a distraction rather than giving additional insight into how to transform one's life.
If you are interested in reading 12 loosely connected stories of how some people rose from very difficult conditions to transform their lives, then this would be a good book. On the other hand, if you are looking for a how-to guide to transforming your own live, this will probably be a bit of a disappointment.

Introduction to Psychology and Counseling: Christian Perspectives and Applications Review

Introduction to Psychology and Counseling: Christian Perspectives and Applications
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a tremendous book for those interested in Christian counseling. I already own one; I'm buying another for my father who is a pastoral counselor. I am currently a counseling graduate student at John Brown University and the variety of subject material that this book covers is simply amazing. It is by far my favorite counseling book, and I have read dozens. It does not knock science, as unfortunately some Christian counseling theorists do. It recognizes scientific truths, while remaining true to the Bible.

Saving Your Second Marriage Before It Starts Review

Saving Your Second Marriage Before It Starts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a divorced person, I have often felt like there are many books written about marriage, but few that deal with the specific issues that I can only imagine affect second marriages. Not content with reading just another book about the general subject of marriage, and not really wanting to read another book about divorce, I was very pleased to be given this book on remarriage. After reading through it, I feel so much more confident now about my ability to enter a second marriage and not be trapped by fears and insecurities that resulted from my first. I feel much more able now to look objectively at the areas I still need to heal and grow in. Praise God for the careful work of Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott in addressing this seldom-addressed issue. I HIGHLY recommend this for anyone who is divorced, even if they haven't yet addressed the possibility of remarriage in their life. [Edit on Jan 10, 2008, about six years after the original review!]: I have come to not necessarily agree with everything that the authors write in this book. But I did find it extremely helpful at the time I read it and wrote this review.]

Year to Success is a refreshing and unique perspective on getting what you want from life. The step by step formula keeps you interested and engaged, but more important, it keeps you motivated to ACT. It is evident that the author speaks from real world success. It is also clear that the purpose of this book is truly to help others get what they want out of life as opposed to just another book to get the writer some notoriety and attention. From someone who's achieved a great deal of success in my own life, I can tell you I'm learning A LOT from this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to live a successful life that has meaning and purpose.

Who the Man Review

Who the Man
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Who the Man by Chris Lynch is a must read for teenagers and all people who work with teenagers. This book tells the story of Earl, a thirteen year old boy, who deals with problems at home and school. He is bigger than everyone else and everyone thinks he is a bully, but he is quite the opposite. He learns the hard way what true friendship is all about and how to lobe both parents even though they divorce. This book is sad at times, but it is hard for the reader to put it down because of its strong conflicts and hopeful out come.
Earl is misunderstood by many people, even by his friends. There is conflict between Earl and his friends. His friends make him do things he really does not want to do. They use him to get stuff that they want like beer, because he is big. In the halls at school, they act like Earl is important to them, but behind his back they treat him badly.
Things are not any better at home. Earl sees his drunken father with another woman. He punches him in the bar. This is only one of many incidents that confuse Earl throughout the story but in the end he is not angry anymore.
To deal with his problems, Earl goes to his quit places. He likes Pryor Church and his room. He talks to himself and God. This helps him calm down and work through his problems.
Any one who reads this book will think it is dismal most of the time, but they will be glad that Earl amends things with his friends and his parents. Even when his parents divorce, he can see all of his friends and both of his parents. The conflicts are true to life, and this makes the book interesting and exciting.

Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts: Seven Questions to Ask Before and After You Marry Review

Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts: Seven Questions to Ask Before and After You Marry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having counseled many couples in 20 years of pastoral ministry, I have read several books on marital, interpersonal relationships. The authors present sound principles that are easy for persons to understand and to apply. I had a few older favorites I would recommend to couples until reading this book -- now I have a new favorite to share instead!
One of the unique, most admirable qualities of this work is that it is very helpful to persons regardless of their marital status. A single individual will find it helpful for insight during dating. A person who is engaged will find it helpful in identifying issues that are sure to arise within marriage. A newlywed will find it helpful in responding to the major adjustments of sharing his/her life with another person. A person who has been married for several years will find it helpful in understanding how a marriage deepens and grows over the course of time.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone wanting to enhance the relationship with his/her "significant other." The Parrotts also have video tapes available to use in a seminar or as part of pre-marital or post-marital counseling. This book is definitely one to own!

The First Thing My Mama Told Me Review

The First Thing My Mama Told Me
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"When I was born, the first thing my mama told me was my name... Mama says my name comes from a long-ago word for light. When I was born, she let that name shine on me." Lucy loves her name, the first thing that made her unique and special, and she remembers many wonderful things about it. Grandpa wrote it in icing on cupcakes when she was one, and Uncle David painted it on the stepstool she used to reach the sink when she was little. When she was three, she scribbled it everywhere she could reach, windows, floors, the front steps, her hand, and even her clothes. Her dad made her alphabet pancakes that spelled LUCY on her plate, and she reveled in eating up each letter. When she was five, her name was on her special coat hook at school where she hung her sweater, and when she was six she remembers stomping each letter in the snow, big enough for the sun and moon to read. Today, Lucy is seven, and as she eats cake with her loving family and opens her presents, she wonders just what her name will bring this year..... Susan Marie Swanson's joyous, lyrical text is filled with imagery and magic. Christine Davenier's lovely evocative artwork is expressive and playful, and complements the text beautifully. Together, word and art bring Lucy and her name to life in a heartwarming and captivating way. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, The First Thing My Mama Told Me is an engaging, feel-good story that begs to be read aloud and shared, and works well as both an introduction to name recognition and writing, and as a cozy bedtime story.

Franny B. Kranny, There's a Bird in Your Hair
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Franny B Kranny loved her long red frizzy hair even if it was always getting stuck in things and causing trouble. So when her mother drags her to the hairdresser before a family reunion, she isn't happy. The hairdresser does his best to pin it up and make it look neat, while Franny schemes to undo his work as soon as she's out of the chair. But as she leaves the salon, a bird lands on her head, snuggles down in her hair and calls it home. Her family is appalled, but Franny is thrilled and very careful not to disturb the bird even sleeping upright in a chair. The next day at the reunion, Franny's family is so embarrassed they keep their distance. But the rest of her relatives are fascinated and Franny soon becomes the center of attention. Pretty soon, her family comes around and agrees that she has the most wonderful head of hair and should never cut it. And that's when Franny surprises everyone..... The dynamic team of Harriet Lerner and Susan Goldhor have written a marvelous story about an individual who dares to be different and really knows her own mind. Their charming, witty text is complemented by Helen Oxenbury's bright, expressive and humorous illustrations that really captures the essence of strong willed Franny and the rest of her unusual family. Both children and adults will be laughing out loud at the antics of this wonderful little girl. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Franny B Kranny, There's a Bird in your Hair is a treasure and a book kids want to read again and again.

The Secret to Teen Power Review

The Secret to Teen Power
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I have been waiting for this book!!
For the last couple of years, I have been working on teaching "The Secret" to my 12-year-old daughter, explaining to her about mindfulness and how to be deliberate in her thought. Have read just about every book by Esther Hicks. Also followed the "plan" in Ask Believe Receive, which has really brought us closer, since we worked on manifesting things as a team. Still, I wanted something made for a younger audience, to break down everything in a way she could easily understand. This book does that.
This book is very similar to the Secret (and follows the same basic outline) but a little more "hip" as far as language goes. It's done in a way kids can relate to, yet still holds the same basic message.
This is the book you wished you had as a kid. It encourages hopes and dreams and let's you know what you want is possible! Even if you're skeptical of the Law of Attraction, to me, this aspect is worth buying it for. It is very encouraging.

The Outline:
INTRODUCTION
THE SECRET REVEALED
THE SECRET MADE SIMPLE
HOW TO USE THE SECRET
POWERFUL PROCESSES
THE SECRET TO MONEY
THE SECRET TO RELATIONSHIPS
THE SECRET TO HEALTH
THE SECRET TO THE WORLD
THE SECRET TO YOU
THE SECRET TO LIFE
Pretty much everything a teen goes through is here, with some stuff my generation wasn't aware of, such as the environment and global community.
I am looking forward to going through this with my daughter.
Something I have done, which you may find helpful, is purchase two copies. I did this so my daughter can give a copy to one of her friends and they can work on manifesting things together. In all the reading I have done, as well as from personal experience, I have found that it is very helpful to have a group of like-minded people in your life. Doing this is one way to make sure she has that.
