Who the Man Review

Who the Man
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Who the Man by Chris Lynch is a must read for teenagers and all people who work with teenagers. This book tells the story of Earl, a thirteen year old boy, who deals with problems at home and school. He is bigger than everyone else and everyone thinks he is a bully, but he is quite the opposite. He learns the hard way what true friendship is all about and how to lobe both parents even though they divorce. This book is sad at times, but it is hard for the reader to put it down because of its strong conflicts and hopeful out come.
Earl is misunderstood by many people, even by his friends. There is conflict between Earl and his friends. His friends make him do things he really does not want to do. They use him to get stuff that they want like beer, because he is big. In the halls at school, they act like Earl is important to them, but behind his back they treat him badly.
Things are not any better at home. Earl sees his drunken father with another woman. He punches him in the bar. This is only one of many incidents that confuse Earl throughout the story but in the end he is not angry anymore.
To deal with his problems, Earl goes to his quit places. He likes Pryor Church and his room. He talks to himself and God. This helps him calm down and work through his problems.
Any one who reads this book will think it is dismal most of the time, but they will be glad that Earl amends things with his friends and his parents. Even when his parents divorce, he can see all of his friends and both of his parents. The conflicts are true to life, and this makes the book interesting and exciting.

A My Name is Andrew is a delightful romp through the alphabet. Each letter is its own story and my children each have their favorite. Beautiful illustrations enhance the smart verse. Kudos to McManus for creating a readable alphabet book! I even learned a few things in the glossary!!!!

Just Being Me #1: I'm SO Mad Review

Just Being Me #1: I'm SO Mad
Average Reviews:

Young children often want many things -- and they always want it now! Even everyday tasks such as a trip to the supermarket can give young children reason to get angry and frustrated... especially when they don't get their way immediately.
The book, "I'm So Mad!" tells the story of a trip to the store, through the eyes of a young child. The child goes through different emotions while picking out items with her mother. Shopping can be a fun experience, or it can make a young child angry and disruptive if they don't get their way. In this story, the little girl cannot buy ice cream when she wants...that made her very mad. It also made her mother mad, but their frustration turned to smiles after the young child accidentally knocks down a pile of oranges. They both share an emotional moment and clean up the mess together.
MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book for young children -- they'll enjoy the descriptive and colorful illustrations, and beginning readers will appreciate the easy-to-read text. This book is part of a new series of picture books called, "Just Being Me," which gives a child's-eye view of a child's everyday challenges, triumphs and experiences. Young children are sure to relate to the child in this story. Parents can use this book to help their children better understand their emotions, and explain how to best deal with angry feelings and not being able to get what they want when they want it. In addition, the story is the perfect length for very young children.

Proud, awkward, giddy, temperamental, loving . . . these are some of the many contrarybehaviors that preschoolers can exhibit from moment to moment as they navigate everyday experiences. Acclaimed author Robie Harris, widely known for her nonfiction books about growing up, now shares her expertise from a fictional child's first-person point-of-view. In these humorous stories, kids and parents together work through normal, healthy feelings and challenges--such as a grocery store tantrum in I'm SO Mad! and the inevitable refusal to face bedtime in I'm NOT Sleepy! With cheerful art by nationally-syndicated cartoonist Nicole Hollander, Just Being Me books celebrate the thrill of newly-found independent skills, self-awareness, and self-determination.

Pinduli (ASPCA Henry Bergh Children's Book Awards) Review

Pinduli (ASPCA Henry Bergh Children's Book Awards)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pinduli's Mother has always tried to let her know that she is the most beautiful hyena in all the world. But not everyone feels that way, especially not Dog, Zebra, and Lion, for they have all made fun of her, telling little Pinduli that her wiggly stripes are ugly, her big ears are unattractive, and her fuzzy mane is not kept well. Pinduli wants nothing more than to just disappear, then no one will be able to hurt her feelings anymore. So she tries various ways to do just that. However, it is only when a crazy mishap that she gets into triggers a strange chain of events that she finally seeks justice, and realizes that even though she's different, she's beautiful.
Jannell Cannon has once again created an amazing children's book whose story and illustrations will stay with the reader, young or old, for years and years to come. Her illustrations are nothing short of brilliant, and the storyline is wonderful, especially for young readers, for it teaches the lesson that everyone is beautiful in their own way. This is a book that should be a part of everyone's home library. Don't miss it.

Slippery Willie's Stupid, Ugly Shoes Review

Slippery Willie's Stupid, Ugly Shoes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Larry Peterson has accomplished many feats in this his first children's book: he has provided an entertaining and clever story that will definitely entertain youngsters, illustrated the book with absolutely first-class drawings, and has delivered a message much needed in the education of children (and parents alike!) - to learn to accept differences in others and in ourselves.
Willie Wiggins has an odd way of ambulating - he has slippery feet that cause him to slip and slide around, unable to climb tress or perform in other forms of play. He hates his slippery feet, and so does his mother and he is the laughing stock of his friends because he slips around instead of walking or running. His mother takes the matter in hand and has special shoes that will prevent Willie from sliding around. Problem? Willie hates the "stupidest, ugliest shoes in the whole world."
When Willie steps into his ugly stupid corrective shoes even his mother laughs at him as do all of his friends at school, making Willie miserable - until Willie wakes up from his dream and realizes he hasn't worn the new shoes yet! When he indeed puts on the shoes not only can he walk normally but he also becomes the envy of his friends for the fabulous new shoes he wears!
Peterson's story flows so well and is so well married to the illustrations that the book is at once engrossing and entertaining as well as being sophisticated. Caldecott and Newbery Awards alert! The only aspect of the book that in a way takes it from the intended reader is the added instructions at the end - well meant ways of listing things that are different in us and in other people and how to deal with these differences. It is one of those examples of overkill as the book is so beautifully done that adding the workbook or study guide at the end feels tacked on and extraneous and because the story and presentation itself makes such a finely honed point: it comes close to dumbing down the reader.
Final diagnosis? Excellent book by a fine new author/illustrator. Hopefully many more books will come from Larry Peterson and Tribute Books. Grady Harp, January 11

Willie Wiggles hates his slippery feet. He just slips, slides and spins all over the place. But what he hates even more are the special shoes that have been made for him that will help him to walk just like all the other kids. Willie thinks that they are the "stupidest, ugliest shoes in the whole world."Discover how sometimes we worry about things about ourselves when actually there is nothing to worry about in the first place.

Jessica and the Wolf: A Story for Children Who Have Bad Dreams Review

Jessica and the Wolf: A Story for Children Who Have Bad Dreams
Average Reviews:

A well written book my seven year old granddaughter could read by herself, and copy the little girl in the book by making a "magic wand" to ward away the bad dreams at night. I also thank the author for including into the story how important it is for the child to talk about the dreams during the day with adults. This book was exactly what I was hoping for ! Thank you Ted Lobby so much!

Don't Pop Your Cork on Mondays: The Children's Anti-Stress Book Review

Don't Pop Your Cork on Mondays: The Children's Anti-Stress Book

I am a counseling intern working with a head start type program that works with parents and preschoolers. I used this book to teach the children and parents about stress management! The book teaches children breathing techniques, guided imagery, and progressive muscle relaxation (all stress reducing activities that are used for adults).
For preschoolers, I skipped over some of the big words, but it has great illustrations and comparisons! It takes a difficult to understand concept and makes it understandable and managable for children.

Things that Make You Feel Good Review

Things that Make You Feel Good
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love Todd Parr's animated illustrations and charm. But after purchasing this book and reading it to my 2-year old, I wasn't as excited about this particular book. The labels "good" and "bad" are used in a way that it introduces ideas into a young child's mind. Like some of the examples were "good:light", "bad: the dark". I am trying to teach my daughter NOT to think of the dark as something bad and not to be afraid of! So that's not too helpful. Also, it has "monsters: bad" as well as "big hairy spiders: bad". We're trying to convince my daughter that monsters don't exist, not that they are "bad" and make her scared even more. The other labels in the book are funny, like "smelly feet: bad" and "hot chocolate with marshmallows: good".
I know Todd Parr just wanted to write a funny book for kids. But if your children are at the stage where they are scared of things or take things very literally, then you might want to choose a different book!

Thumbalina of Toulaba is a children's picturebook retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale, with a twist. Set on an imaginary island in the Caribbean, Thumbalina of Toulaba follows a dark-skinned Thumbalina born of a flower. Ill-treated by her normal-sized siblings, and beset by would-be suitors of every species imaginable, Thumbalina must learn how to stand up for herself and say "no", and find her destiny with the help of a beloved bird of paradise friend. Have You Filled a Bucket Today? Review

The concept of bucket filling is one that kids can really understand and relate to. I read it to my three-year old, and now he asks for it every night. He loves the pictures and has even begun talking about bucket filling when he says something nice to someone. This book is a wonderful tool for families and teachers to give kids a visual way to think about kindness toward others. And it's a good reminder for adults, too!

I'm Gonna Like Me: Letting Off a Little Self-Esteem Review

I'm Gonna Like Me: Letting Off a Little Self-Esteem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is rare that a book comes along that all children will love. I say love all children because we have wee ones who are hearing or sight impaired and its nice to see a book that these children as well as able bodied children can enjoy. For the hearing impaired child the illustration will bring the book to life. While the sight impaired child will find the words "illustrate" the book.
And for the rest of us the combination is a sure winner. And its not a sappy feel good self esteem book but more along the lines of we are all human and fall down, and feel we don't fit in at times, but it is in keeping trying that is what make life work. And its a book that will appeal to boys and girls, males and females. And lest you think it is only for wee ones, its also a good book for teens, college kids, those going thru lifes many passages. Or for someone who is going thru a rough period in their lives.
As a rule I avoid celebrity books like the plague, but Ms Curtis is a true talent.
