This book is an excellent primer for clinical social workers working with volatile populations as it addresses ego functioning and deficits in depth. It additionally provides invaluable insight into borderline and other personality disordered individuals, as well as a survey of other noted theorists, besides Dr. Goldstein in the areas of ego functions.

Born Blue Review

Born Blue
Average Reviews:

Many professionals are writing about reactive attachment disorder, but this is the first book I've encountered that allows the reader to see into the soul of a child with this condition. The author does not attempt to sponge up the messes the protagonist creates for herself. Instead Han Nolan helps the reader understand why a child with this condition views the world without empathy for others. The protagonist's only concern is for herself because she cannot trust anyone else to care for her. The world is, after all, a very dangerous place. Despite the protagonist's anti-social actions, the reader experiences compassion for her. Perhaps this book will help more people become aware of RAD. We must continue to seek therapeutic alternatives for these children.

I finished this book in two days because I couldn't put it down. Clare is so much like me and I loved reading about someone out there who has the same problems as I do. This book is also hilarious and taught me not to take myself too seriously. I especially loved Aunt Rusty and Elsa. I hope there's another one out soon. I can't wait to read what happens next in Clare's life!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mostly Monty: First Grader Review

Mostly Monty: First Grader
Average Reviews:

My five-year-old has moved onto to chapter books and really loves the Monty series. The stories deal with all of the things a regular 5 or 6-yr-old lives with every day---making friends, going to school, self-esteem, dealing with new situations, adventure, being different, fitting in, etc.---all through the eyes of a completely adorable character named Monty. I hope we see many many more installments of the Monty series!

A shy boy with asthma starts first grade -- and comes into his own -- in this appealing story for early chapter book readers.Six-year-old Monty doesn't have a brother, a sister, or a pet. What he does have is asthma, which sometimes makes it hard to breathe and often makes him feel like he'd rather be somebody else. And now that he's starting first grade, he's very nervous about being with all those kids he won't know. Luckily, he loves to read -- even really hard books -- and has a talent for finding things, from a cocooning caterpillar to classmates who want to be in his very own club. With familiar situations and gentle humor, Johanna Hurwitz follows an endearing character as he discovers that being himself can be pretty great after all.

Joe Louis, My Champion Review

Joe Louis, My Champion

Sammy, a young boy growing up in the early 1900s, has already started to think about what he would like to do when he is older. He is extremely inspired by his hero, Joe Louis, and wants to follow in his footsteps as a boxer. Further fueling this hope is the opportunity to listen with friends and family members to the Joe Louis versus James Braddock heavyweight championship boxing match on the big radio in Mister Jake's country store. Over time, Sammy begins to see the bigger picture about how Joe Louis's success can help him to dream big about a variety of occupations, not just boxing. With its lush oil paintings, historical setting, and informative afterword, this interesting book makes a nice vehicle for talking with children about careers they may pursue.

Goalkeeper in Charge (Matt Christopher Sports Bio Bookshelf) Review

Goalkeeper in Charge (Matt Christopher Sports Bio Bookshelf)

This is a good book. In the story, shy Tina is a fan of soccer, especially the fact it's a team sport where she won't stand out to much, which is good, because Tina hates getting attention. When she joins a new soccer team, everything is great until her coach asks her to do something for the team...play keeper!!! That horrifies Tina. Everything about keeper, even the uniform, stands out! Can she overcome her shyness to play the best she can? This book appeals to me partly because I am rather shy, and play a lot of keeper on my team, so I stand out. However, playing keeper has helped me overcome most of my shyness and be a good player, on and off the field, just like Tina.
