My nearly two-year-old instantly fell in love with this book. She "demanded" that it be read three times in a row and would have kept on if I hadn't insisted on stopping. She loves to say "Super Sue" and really loved all the moving pieces of the book.

Sing and Hum Bumblebee Review

Sing and Hum Bumblebee

What an uplifting book for any young reader AND family. My granddaughter immediately grasped the concept the book offers and could not wait to read it again and again. When stressful situations occur at school she says she quietly responds by humming or singing that "special song". The illustrations are beautiful and children love to try to find the hidden characters. I truly believe that every school library should have a copy of this book to share with students. What a lovely gift the authors have given to children and families.

"Sing and Hum Bumblebee" is the charming tale of an endearing young bumblebee who learns to accept and embrace the differences that make him unique and special by singing a song taught by the wise Queen Bee.Co-authors Mari and Maya have created a work that not only entertains children, but helps them to find inner peace and harmony as they learn to deal with the challenges of growing up.While there are many other books that teach children to sing, "Sing and Hum Bumblebee" is unique in that it builds on experience and research that shows how singing and humming have proven to be an effective means of facilitating emotional and physiological balance.By encouraging children to sing a new song to the familiar tune of "Twinkle Little Star," Mari and Maya generate an environment in which children can not only participate and be entertained, but an environment that will give them a chance to empower themselves and gain control of their own situations through singing.Infused with richly colored illustrations, "Sing and Hum Bumblebee" is a tale that will provide comfort, delight and harmony for both children and parents alike.

Larry was a very believable character and the situation he found himself in made me smile. Larry was scared he would lose respect from his friends by being in an underwear commercial, but he gained it from all. This was a perfect book for me - a 9 year old, 3rd grade girl.

This is yet another WONDERFUL installment in the SOCCER CATS series.
Our 6-year old daughter is an avid and excellent reader. She loves the series.
We have given the book (and others in the series) as GIFTS to BOYS AND GIRLS aged 7-8 years and received only positive feedback from the children and their parents.
HIGHLY recommended FUN, funny and age-appropriate reading!

ENJOY!

Mable Riley: A Reliable Record of Humdrum, Peril, and Romance Review

Mable Riley: A Reliable Record of Humdrum, Peril, and Romance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mable Riley, a bundle of original energy, has recently moved to a small community in Canada, in 1901. As the story opens, and much to Mable's delight, she leaves her "crowded" house to accompany her sister on what Mable hopes will be a true adventure. The lively story includes hard work, nosy neighbors, pesky boys, a hint of romance, and a friendship with the local "trouble making" spinster. The story includes passages of Mable's own writings - the melodramatic tale she is posting back to her old schoolmates in segments. I liked the "real" story more, but found the whole book a great escape on a rainy day.

A Dolphin up a Tree Review

My boy asks to be read this book again and again. He loves to recognize the characters and clearly relates to Dolphin and her dilemma. This is fascinating to me, because each character defines a unique personality type -- and my son is definately a "dolphin." Perhaps he felt "stuck up a tree" when he first began attending school. This book is about teamwork and respect for others -- and I'm so pleased that he's learning these qualities while enjoying his favorite book.

Clout: Tapping Spiritual Wisdom to Become a Person of Influence Review

Clout: Tapping Spiritual Wisdom to Become a Person of Influence
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Can Biblical content meet business objectives, much less give you clout? Well, yes, according to the authors. In fact, this is an effective balancing act, posing business objectives on one end of the seesaw and inspiration on the other. The content is simultaneously spiritual and businesslike - if a little misty on facts, such as a bit of fuzzy history in the pages that cover Aristotle's teachings. To their credit, when authors Stephen R. Graves and Thomas G. Addington get businesslike, they are good at it. They convey reliable instructions about influence, mentoring and clout echoed by other books on management and spirituality. They also make some original, if banal, inspirational observations. For example, their key point is that Jesus intended to influence people. Well, that's the point of ministry, isn't it? And of clout. The book's evangelical tone focuses on Christianity - as opposed to the general business impact of spirituality and mentoring - thus, we note that for those Christians who are trying to integrate their faith and their work effectively, this book could be a welcome guidepost.

Big Government and Affirmative Action: The Scandalous History of the Small Business Administration Review

Big Government and Affirmative Action: The Scandalous History of the Small Business Administration
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"In "Big Government and Affirmative Action," Jonathan J. Bean tells the story of the role of small business in the growth of the American state. This compact account is a fine sequel to the author's award winning "Beyond the Broker State: A History of the Federal Government's Policies Toward Small Business, 1936-61" (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1996). It describes the process by which interest-group actors (business groups, congressional committee, and bureaucrats) operate to build nearly indestructible government programs. In addition, the book adds an important dimension to the story of the development of affirmative action. In manifold ways, congressional and bureaucratic policy toward "disadvantaged" businesses adumbrated later policy toward disadvantaged minorities and myriad of other victim groups, and the Small Business Administration (SBA) itself took up minority preferences as its raison d'etre."
Jonathan Bean pulls no punches in this nonpartisan look at an agency notorious for corruption. Republicans, he explains, have supported the Small Business Administration to deflect criticism that they are beholden to "big" business, whereas Democrats have supported it to show that they are not "anti-business."
"Bean has done a model job in producing a smoothly written and often amusing policy history, and the University Press of Kentucky has done excellent work in editing and publishing it."

Storied Lives: The Cultural Politics of Self-Understanding Review

Storied Lives: The Cultural Politics of Self-Understanding
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In an age when "narrative" looms so large in academic discourse - its construction and its consequences - this collection was one of the first to view the function of life retelling in a complex and original way. The essays are diverse. But, before anything else, they are readable. Concepts which have so often become obscured beyond comprehension are entirely clear here. And they are anchored in lives and life circumstances across a wide and informative range.
This is a foundational collection.

In this provocative book, psychologists, anthropologists, and sociologists analyze interviews with a range of subjects (a minister, Holocaust survivors, a rape victim, and others) to present a new way of thinking about autobiographical narratives. They argue that these narratives play a significant role in the formation of identity, that the way they are told is shaped by prevalent cultural norms, and that the stories may be liberated from the psychic and social obstacles constraining them if the narrators gain critical insight into their own accounts.

Sophie Pitt-Turnbull Discovers America (Reading Together) Review

Sophie Pitt-Turnbull Discovers America (Reading Together)

I am an adult who loves reading teen books.
This one is good. The story of a young british girl who goes to New York for the summer. She gets the surprise of her life when she gets there.
While this book is not a hard hitting one (no drugs, sex, etc.) it is written with lots of humour and explores what happens when we have pre-conceived ideas of a person just by looking at their surroundings.
Sophie ends up learning some valuable lessons which, thanks to the authors, wonderful writing never makes us feel as though we have to preached to.
This book is a nice entry into the teen books. Buy it.

Fat Boy Swim Review

Fat Boy Swim
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book was pretty good, not the best but 4 stars is too low.
The scenario is that the very fat boy Jim, gets teased a lot a school (ovbiously because hes fat), lives with his mother and aunt pol, (his father dies a few years ago) and Jimmy has one secret that pretty much no one knows about: his cooking. He is a very good chef, and plans to open up his own resturant one day but is too embaressed to tell anyone what he thinks. His school coach (father patrick) has seen the abuse that Jimmy has taken from his classmates and offers to help in order for Jimmy to cook for him at a fundraiser for a well to be built to help poor people. Jimmy starts having these weird dreams, and then fiqure out he wants to swim. His classmates see this, and tease him even more, but Jimmy can never stand up for himself. I won't tell you anymore, so you can find out for yourself, but this book talks about important issues about bullying, learning to stand up for yourself, going after your dreams and not being afraid to show who you are. It also contains a huge twist that no one expects, and the only thing ill tell you about that is that Jimmy has family problems that are quite sad, but he learns to deal with them and accept who he is. (This book also contains a litttle bit of romance as well!) I would highly recommend this book, because it really captures you tino reading it and you can learn a few important lessons from it. This author really knows how to write, and if you don't read this book you'll be wishing you did the rest of your life :)!

I thought the story started kind of slow, but gradually I was drawn in to the book to the point that I could not put it down. I got angry as I read about each struggle that the main character went through, and I was relieved at the end when everything worked out for the main character. It was very enjoyable for me.

The Gypsies Never Came Review

The Gypsies Never Came
Average Reviews:

Augie, the hero of this beautifully written book, is unusual in many ways. He suffers from a physical handicap and a yearning for the father he has never known. When a wonderfully eccentric girl comes to town, she changes his life. At first Lydie Rose is a thorn in Augie's side as she encourages him to celebrate the fact that he is different from other kids. While he slowly comes to believe that the "gypsies" will come for him, the reader is drawn into his world, a realistic small town. I gave this book to my young brother because I recall reading another of the author's books when I was his age. That book was funny. This book is funny too, some of the time. But it is much more than that. It is a story that stays with you, filled with interesting characters. My brother insisted that I read it myself and I enjoyed it as much as he did
