Miss Twiggley's Tree Review

As a first grader, I used to check this book out of our classroom library to read and re-read. I even recall spending hours tracing the illustrations. However, as an adult, I could never remember the name of that favorite book. After years of searching in libraries and book databases for children's books with "willow trees," I finally did an Internet search using the same search criteria and was delighted to find not only the correct title and author information but also to discover that it has been reprinted. I have ordered a copy and am so excited to share this wonderful story with my son.
I have also discovered that there is a clay-mation video version. I haven't seen it, but I'm hoping to. It looks very good and has won several awards. http://www.bixpix.com/what/twiggley.htm
This book is a terrific story for your kids of all ages. Don't hesitate to purchase a copy for your family!

Why did Miss Twiggley live in a tree? Why did she send her dog, Puss, out to do the shopping? Why did she always run away and hide when people came to visit? And it was rumored that Miss Twiggley had even more peculiar habits...Old Miss TwiggleyWas friendly with bears."They shed on the sofa," she said,"But who cares?"And was it true, as the mayor's wife had heard, that she actually slept in her hat? "Simply disgraceful!" they said. But when a hurricane hits the town and the water rises, everyone is grateful to Miss Twiggley and her tree. Even better, Miss Twiggley herself learns a very important lesson, with a warm and happy ending.

This is my kids all time favorite book. They ask me to read it to them over and over again. They just can't get enough of Velma Gratch. I think that we all have a little bit of Velma in us, and that is one of the things that is so applealling about it. I highly recommend it.

IT'S HARD TO BE VELMA entering first grade. That's because everyone has marvelous memories of her two older sisters, who were practically perfect first graders, and no one even notices Velma. But all that changes on a class trip to the butterfly conservatory, a place neither of her sisters has been. When a monarch roosts on Velma's finger and won't budge for days - no one will ever forget it . . . or her!Kids will enjoy reading about everything butterflies, from migration to metamorphosis, as they follow Velma's own transformation.

Don't we all love giants? Female ones, at that !
For anyone who thinks Fiona (Shrek's companion and confidante) is THE coolest female giant around, you HAVE GOT to read about Ella Kate !!
Stand Straight is totally inspiring and accessible. Wonderful for kids of any age.
This book is magical. God bless the Klise sisters. If this is your very-first Klise book, you are a little behind the curve. Not to worry, there are plenty of opportunities to catch up. Check out their Regarding the... series (e.g., Fountain, Bathroom, Bees, Trees and Sink), and their AWESOME (and slightly spooky) 43 Cemetery Road series !
Somebody needs to nominate these sisters for a Caldecott, a Newberry.. or heck, a Pulitzer !

The Sheep in Wolf's Clothing Review

The Sheep in Wolf's Clothing

This was one of those fun little surprises found at the library. Ewetopia doesn't like her wool so she tries to dress up and dazzle the rams and shock the ewes. Nobody really notices.
She gets an invitation to the Woolyones' Costume Ball. Now here is her chance to outshine everybody. After a flurry of costumes she decides on a Wolf costume. Bad faux pas. Another sheep appears without a costume. Ewetopia tries to talk to him and discovers he is not a sheep!
This is a cute story that really works due to the artwork. The expressions of the sheep are spot on and the wolf is funny. My girl liked the story as I would figure she would since she is a fan of Tacky!

Would I Ever Lie to You? Review

Would I Ever Lie to You

Caralyn Buehner and Jack Davis did such a fantastic job with this book that it left both my children (ages 4 and 5)and myself rolling with laughter by the end! The narrator pretty much explains his dilemma of never knowing when his ornery older cousin is telling the truth, or just teasing him. The older cousin starts out by begging the narrator (whose name is never revealed) not to eat his piece of pie because it could be poisonous and he could die. The narrator states, "A poison pie? Could it be true? With Cousin Ed you never knew." The narrator proceeds to explain to the reader (with various hilarious examples) why he never knew. By the end, the gullible narrator has grown a bit wiser and manages to get the last laugh!
Anyone out there with an ornery relative can most likely relate to this book! The illustrations are just as comical as the story line. This is definitely one of my kids' favorites. My four year old has it memorized. This is the first Caralyn Buehner book we have ever read, but it will certainly not be the last!

When your cousin is always telling outrageous tales, how do you know what to believe? He says you were hatched from an egg in the garden, and that sure sounds absurd. But not all of his stories are false: He was right about your aunt Mary not having teeth; and Dad agreed with him that, yes, your mom does have eyes in the back of her head! So when Ed tells you that your dessert—the piece of pie you've been looking forward to all meal long—is full of poison, what should you do?
In this spirited, silly book, the little kid finally gets to turn the tables on the big bully. And revenge is sweet as pie!
