The Solitude of Self: Thinking About Elizabeth Cady Stanton Review

The Solitude of Self: Thinking About Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Average Reviews:

I enjoyed reading this short book about Elizabeth Cady Stanton and her times because it told me just enough about her and fitted her thoughts and ideas into what was going on intellectually in the United States at the time. I appreciated the connections made between her type of feminist thinking and that of others before and after. It made me think, too, about my own feminist philosophy. And, once again, I was surprised by the depths of male chauvinism through the ages.

Addicted to Stress: A Woman's 7 Step Program to Reclaim Joy and Spontaneity in Life Review

Addicted to Stress: A Woman's 7 Step Program to Reclaim Joy and Spontaneity in Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If there's one thing that women everywhere know about, it's stress. Stress about kids, relationships, work, dinner, laundry...the list goes on and on. In fact, one might say women are "addicted to stress." Which is exactly the idea behind Debbie Mandel's ingenious new book. In it, she likens a woman's tireless work to identity theft and points out the irony of calling a never-ending to-do list that we use to keep ourselves occupied every moment of every day "progress." But there's good news - we're only 7 simple steps away from changing our lives. Mandel helps women understand that stress addiction is a real problem, recognize the signs, and take action to improve our health and better our lives. And she's got her work cut out for her; after all, one of the major problems with stress addiction is that women today feel they need to keep busy in order to thrive. How often do you find yourself with free time, only to wonder what work or chores you could be getting done instead? Sure, we know we're busy, but we relish the purpose and sense of accomplishment, right? It turns out that stress may be affecting our lives in more ways than we realize, damaging our relationships, our family life, and even our health. Mandel's book is as interactive as it is informative, and it's absolutely a must read for anyone who experiences even a little stress in her daily life (which, let's face it, is pretty much everyone). With anecdotes from women you can relate to, questions and activities to really get you thinking about your own life, and advice to change everything from your diet and your house to your routine and your mindset, this book has the potential to really make a difference in your life. So enough with the excuses - finding the time to read this book will mean finding the time to rediscover yourself.

There is a moment in every child's life when they think something to the effect of "I just can't do that." For some kids, this is a fleeting feeling; others get stuck by the thought almost constantly. This is where Bella Gets Her Skates On comes in.
Bella is a little bunny who worries. With a big brother and big sister who seem fearless and good at everything, Bella often feels left behind. When her family decides to go skating one frosty winter morning, Bella worries that her little legs won't allow her to keep up. Her Daddy decides that the best way to convince her to go skating is to start small. After doing all sorts of fun games that show Bella she can keep up with anyone in her family, they end up at the lake. Will Bella be able to lace up her skates and give the ice a try?
Bella Gets Her Skates On is a beautiful way to show children that trying something new can be fun and exciting. It illustrates a great family relationship, the trials that come along with being the youngest child, playing and learning together, and the importance of encouragement from a parent. It leaves the reader with an upbeat and heartwarming message that a child will carry with them long after the book has been closed.
Armchair Interviews says: With a great message, entertaining story, and beautiful artwork, Bella is a great addition to any child's library.

Don't we all love giants? Female ones, at that !
For anyone who thinks Fiona (Shrek's companion and confidante) is THE coolest female giant around, you HAVE GOT to read about Ella Kate !!
Stand Straight is totally inspiring and accessible. Wonderful for kids of any age.
This book is magical. God bless the Klise sisters. If this is your very-first Klise book, you are a little behind the curve. Not to worry, there are plenty of opportunities to catch up. Check out their Regarding the... series (e.g., Fountain, Bathroom, Bees, Trees and Sink), and their AWESOME (and slightly spooky) 43 Cemetery Road series !
Somebody needs to nominate these sisters for a Caldecott, a Newberry.. or heck, a Pulitzer !

Diary of a Fairy Godmother Review

Diary of a Fairy Godmother
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
DIARY OF A FAIRY GODMOTHER is told in first person by Hunky Dory, a young witch who attends Harbinger's Charm School for Young Witches. Hunky is at the head of her class in charm school. She can turn princes into dragons and make teacups and hats appear out of thin air. Her classmates are jealous of Hunky's ability to cast any spell without disaster. Her mother, a brewer of magic potions, thinks Hunky will grow up to be the most wicked witch wherever the four winds blow.
It isn't long before trouble begins. At first, her classmate, Frantic Search, notices Hunky undoing an evil charm. Then Hunky is invited to a baby christening at the castle. She watches fairy godmothers giving wonderful gifts to the newborn baby. After her Auntie casts a wicked spell on the new baby, Hunky uses her magic to undo the spell. When she does, she gets a warm, tingling sensation all over her body. She wonders if it would be possible to become a fairy godmother herself.
When Hunky's mother, Auntie, and Mrs. Harbinger learn that Hunky is considering changing careers, they try to discourage her. Despite their efforts, Hunky is more determined than ever to try granting wishes for a living. She sets up shop in the bottom of a wishing well and grants wishes to people who toss down coins. Eventually, Hunky decides that she wants to become a real fairy godmother, but it will take the help of a special girl named Cinderella to make it happen.
Esme Raji Codell, who has worked as a teacher, a children's librarian, and a bookseller, is the author of two previous books for children: SING A SONG OF TUNA FISH: Hard-to-Swallow Stories From Fifth Grade, and SAHARA SPECIAL, which was the winner of the IRA Children's Book Award.
DIARY OF A FAIRY GODMOTHER is a clever addition to her growing body of work. It is a story about empowerment and making things happen rather than just waiting and wishing for them to happen.

First Daughter: Extreme American Makeover Review

First Daughter: Extreme American Makeover
Average Reviews:

Here's a feel good book just in time for the election season. But it's more than just that. Perkins weaves an exquisite cultural sensitivity into her Presidential election drama, drawing on personal experience and what I can only describe as a really big heart. The characters: An adopted South Asian teen. A flower child mom who is a church-going political liberal! Her husband: the kindest, most tolerant Republican (since Abe Lincoln), but not a church goer. The opponent: Hill sans Bill, with a handsome son to boot. But the best character of all is Uncle Mohamed. I can't wait for him to reappear in the sequel.
And yes, there are "bad guys"--an over-the-hill (at 30!) media know-it-all, and the usual paparazzi.
While marketed as a teen novel, ADULTS WILL REALLY WANT TO READ THIS as an antidote to the evening news. Perkins is clearly anchored in reality, even as she tries to bring out the best in (nearly all) of her characters.
