Sunflower Sal Review

Sal is a big girl in search of her special talents. She admires her grandmother's quilting abilities and tries to quilt herself, but is dissatisfied with the results. With supportive encouragement from her family, Sal pursues her gift of planting sunflower seeds, and is beautifully rewarded at harvest time. A great book to promote positive self-esteem (especially in girls). Warm, lovely illustrations.

Trusting Yourself: How to Stop Feeling Overwhelmed and Live More Happily with Less Effort Review

Trusting Yourself: How to Stop Feeling Overwhelmed and Live More Happily with Less Effort

I have been a fan of Ms. Ryan's for some time now. Her writings on kindness have been quite influential on the values I cherish and how I aspire to live my life. In her new book, "Trusting Yourself", she addresses what I believe is an epidemic in our "future shock" culture - people feeling overwhelmed, perfectionistic, self-doubting, defective, and dependent on experts to tell us how to live. Reading her (as usual) insightful and empathic words, I have come back to my senses and to my inherent common sense. A much-needed balm for our frantic psyches in these challenging times. Highly recommended reading for anyone who's wavered in their faith in their own abilities and passions!

Unstoppable Me: 10 Ways to Soar Through Life Review

Unstoppable Me: 10 Ways to Soar Through Life

I bought this from Amazon and recieved it yesterday when my 4 year old was in preschool. As I skimmed the book I thought to myself that it looked really good but was probably too advanced for her. I was wrong about that. She loved it.
The book discusses 10 ways to soar through life:
1. You're great--no matter what!
2. Persistance pays off!
3. Welcome to the Unknown
4. You have a choice
5. Farewell to worry
6. Peace begins with you
7. Enjoy the Here-and-now
8. Healthy me!
9. Creativity is the key!
10. What can you give.
These principles are each explained on one side of the page. On the other side a situational example of how a child applied it in his or her own way.
The thing my child and I liked most about the book was the section at the end where it asks questions about how the child has or could use each of the 10 principles. I was a bit amazed and delighted by what my daughter shared with me--thing I didn't know about her her life away from me. Her eyes really lit up during this part and she talked a mile a minute.
I'm very pleased with the book written by Wayne Dyer and Kristina Tracy. I have been a fan of Dyer's CD's (based on his books) for some time now which are geared to adults. The illustrations by Stacy Heller Budnick are very eye appealing and cheerful.
I love these positive messages that I can share with my daughter as she grows up and I want to add the first book Dyer wrote for children to her library. Now if only Deepak Chopra would write a few children's books--I'd love that too.

Following in the footsteps of Dr. Wayne Dyer's first children's book, the bestseller Incredible You! this work goes even further toward expressing Wayne's positive message for children. In Unstoppable Me! Dr. Dyer teaches children how to hold on to the no-limit thinking he believes they were born with, rather than just trying to "fit in." In doing so, they can learn to truly enjoy life and become unstoppable as they strive to attain their dreams.

Storey's Basic Country Skills: A Practical Guide to Self-Reliance Review

Storey's Basic Country Skills: A Practical Guide to Self-Reliance

We bought this tome just a few weeks before moving from the city where we'd lived our entire lives to a 20-acre rural country place miles and miles from any city limits.
For the first year especially, we kept this book out. You would be astonished at its contents. It describes the pros and cons of water wells, reusing dirt, planning land for gardens and barns, chicken problems, keeping goats, arranging around weather, tanning leather, insect control, tree problems to watch out for and their solutions, energy in places where the lines don't run, getting water from point A to B, storing grains and other foods, and... you NAME IT!
This made our lives so much better. We didn't even use all the advice we read simply because one family can only do so much the first year they move into the country for the first time but this book was our comfort book in knowing that if we had problems, we'd find the solutions here.
