Finding Hope in the Age of Melancholy Review

Finding Hope in the Age of Melancholy

This is a book well worth reading if one is concerned about the health of today's American Culture. After a slow start, Mr. Awbrey zeros in on the value and meaning. He shows that self has become the lead cultural actor of our time displacing community and country in the process while Post-Modern philosophy tells us there is no hope of discovering meaning beyond the self. Mr. Awbery shows how Modernism has brought us to this point and Post-Modernism has stranded us there. But Mr. Awbery is not satisfied with this condition and calls on great thinkers of the past and present to brought peace and social harmony through science and technology, but massive destruction, bloodshed and millions of atomized, disinherited individuals who deny any allegiance to universal moral ideals or spiritual beliefs."
"... the self ... has been divorced from tradition, community, and morality. All those character forming forces are replaced by a fashionable appearance - a public-relations self."
"... many Americans ... perceive life ... as a quest for the 'self,' an almost mythological creature defined according to the latest therapeutic model of mental health or trendy psychological theory of consciousness that promises control over life while brushing aside moral anxieties that have burdened people for countless generations."
I highly recommend this book for those who seek meaning in human life. Mr. Awbrey has answered that question for himself and shares the answer with his reader

Jung (A Brief Insight) Review

Jung (A Brief Insight)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start to mention that I am not a social scienticst myself; my impression was that Jung is considered as someone who introduced many breakthrough concepts in psychology, but is also being 'hyped'. Therefore I was looking for a few books that would give me a proper (= not too appreciative, but scientifically objective) introducton to Jung and his ideas.
First I read Calvin Halls "A Primer of Jungian Psychology", but I found that book difficult to read. At the end I was unable to summarize Jungs ideas for myself. For me this is always a good test whether or not a book has had any impact on me. A year later I came accross the VSI by Anthony Stevens. Perhaps, reading Hall prepared me, but I found the VSI book very good.
What I like in particular about the VSI book is:
- it seems rather objective to me (i.e. maintaining a somewhat critical undertone)
- it now and then openly acknowledges that Jungs approach was rather non-mainstream, sometimes against-the-stream. Allowing the reader to make up his own mind.
- its division into well organised chapters helps the reader to progress through the book and look up things afterwards.
I also missed a few things:
- Stevens emphasizes Jungs goal to develop a psychology aimed at "personal growth and development". In this context, I would be very interested to see a comparison with the ideas of Viktor Frankl. After all, one cannot discuss existential psychology without mentioning Frankl.
- I would have liked to see more material included about the present day status of Jungs ideas: since I am not a psychologist myself, I wonder to what extent Jungs ideas are still upheld today. Especially all his ideas about dreams: to me this seems difficult to test scientifically.
Summary: easy to read book, after finishing it I have the impression I learned a lot. I recommend it.

Unstoppable Me: 10 Ways to Soar Through Life Review

Unstoppable Me: 10 Ways to Soar Through Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this from Amazon and recieved it yesterday when my 4 year old was in preschool. As I skimmed the book I thought to myself that it looked really good but was probably too advanced for her. I was wrong about that. She loved it.
The book discusses 10 ways to soar through life:
1. You're great--no matter what!
2. Persistance pays off!
3. Welcome to the Unknown
4. You have a choice
5. Farewell to worry
6. Peace begins with you
7. Enjoy the Here-and-now
8. Healthy me!
9. Creativity is the key!
10. What can you give.
These principles are each explained on one side of the page. On the other side a situational example of how a child applied it in his or her own way.
The thing my child and I liked most about the book was the section at the end where it asks questions about how the child has or could use each of the 10 principles. I was a bit amazed and delighted by what my daughter shared with me--thing I didn't know about her her life away from me. Her eyes really lit up during this part and she talked a mile a minute.
I'm very pleased with the book written by Wayne Dyer and Kristina Tracy. I have been a fan of Dyer's CD's (based on his books) for some time now which are geared to adults. The illustrations by Stacy Heller Budnick are very eye appealing and cheerful.
I love these positive messages that I can share with my daughter as she grows up and I want to add the first book Dyer wrote for children to her library. Now if only Deepak Chopra would write a few children's books--I'd love that too.

Following in the footsteps of Dr. Wayne Dyer's first children's book, the bestseller Incredible You! this work goes even further toward expressing Wayne's positive message for children. In Unstoppable Me! Dr. Dyer teaches children how to hold on to the no-limit thinking he believes they were born with, rather than just trying to "fit in." In doing so, they can learn to truly enjoy life and become unstoppable as they strive to attain their dreams.

What If?: The Challenge of Self-Realization Review

What If: The Challenge of Self-Realization
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In Eldon Taylor's typical thought-provoking style, he takes you on a journey of topics that will open up your belief system so that you can exam it... and then make improvement where you feel they are needed. He exposes the fact that Society is competing with you to take control of your mind. He then guides you in taking back control where you might have relinquished it.
Eldon helps you to acknowledge that we have all struggled with our own thoughts and choices... some more than others... and that it's okay. And he not only encourages you to take more responsibility for your thoughts and decisions, he provides some great examples to ponder and tools to use to make better choices.
By taking control of your mind you will find that the universe helps you to find the answers and to bring what you want into your life.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is ready to take on a more mature outlook... to be your own person... and to do your own thinking. People who are on the immature side (and like it that way)... probably won't enjoy this book.
I loved "What If" . . . What if you did too?
Another book that really appealed to me a couple of months ago and I'm still passing it along to all my friends is from Madeleine Kay called Serendipitously Rich: How to Get Delightfully, Delectably, Deliciously Rich (or Anything Else You Want) in 7 Ridiculously Easy Steps.

What if you awoke tomorrow with amnesia—no memory of who you are, what you like and dislike, and so on. Would you be the same person? What if, as in the movie The Matrix, you discovered that everything was a simulation and you were just a programmed component? What if everything you believed was false? Who would you be then?
Eldon Taylor has been researching the power of the mind for more than 25 years. He has repeatedly demonstrated the overt attempts that have been made to control your thinking. While very interesting in theory, most of us do not understand this on a personal level. It is easy to understand the concept of Mind Programming when it is occurring with someone else, but most would deny that they too are victims.
What If? is a very personal book. By using everyday situations and guiding you through numerous thought experiments, Eldon does an excellent job of peeling back the layers and revealing the dissonance in much of your thinking, beliefs, desires, and choices—contradictory beliefs held at the same time with no apparent awareness. Once you have seen your own mind with the filtered lenses removed, it is impossible to remain the same. That is why so many have praised this work as being absolutely life-changing—not just a fascinating read—but a transformational experience!
