You Are Special, Little One Review

As a children's library clerk, I see many such books in the course of my work. This is a lovely picture book; however, one thing bothers me: the baby fox is repeatedly referred to, both in the blurb and the actual text, as a 'fox cub'. Baby foxes are not cubs. They are kits. I hope this will be corrected in later editions.

Baby Turtle's Tale Review

Baby Turtle's Tale
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Baby Turtle is one of seven species of sea turtles. Mama Turtle came ashore, dug a hole in the sand, laid several eggs, and carefully buried them. One by one the eggs hatched during the next 45 to 70 days. One egg was left un-hatched. Mama turtle took her babies for a swim and to their new home in the reef. Early the next morning Baby Turtle broke out of his shell. He wondered where is family could be.
A nearby crab pointed him in the direction the family had gone and warned of dangers on the beach. In clever rhyming lyrics the Baby Turtle's Tale is told. A seagull, giant waves, an octopus, a shark, and being snared by a fisherman's net are all a part of Baby Turtle's dangerous adventurous journey.
The fisherman quickly released Baby Turtle back to the sea. Dolphins guided him on his way, as he let his instincts take over. Schools of bright-painted fish gave him a clue he was approaching the reef. Would he find his family there?
Cheerful, brightly colored illustrations drawn by Romi Caron artfully complement the words of the narrative and the special Ani-motion windows created by Jeffrey Charles Cole and Heather Brown.
A "Learn about Sea Turtles" section at the end of the books highlights information on this endangered species as well as offers suggestions for ways the young reader can help safeguard the Sea Turtle's future.
A delightful and engaging read aloud book for families with young children.

All by Myself Review

All by Myself

This picture book is nicely illustrated and has a nice message for children. (Nice messages in picture books seem harder to find these days.) It is a story of a young elephant who wants to pick leaves for breakfast all by herself. The message to children is that it is good to try new things and be a little independent. However, while they are young they can still use a little help from their parents. A parents help in conjunction with a child's determination makes for a good combination.

Pigs Picnic Review

Pigs Picnic

The story was about not to always listen to what your friend's say, but to think for yourself. The pig goes around and wants to go to Mrs. Pig's house and ask her to go on a picnic. Some animals give him advice so Mrs. Pig will like him. But, it turns out that Mrs. Pig was scared of him and the way he looked. So he ran back and gave his animal friends back the advice they gave him! I think this book was really cool because it taught a lesson. Little kids can really learn from this book. It's exciting and everyone should read it. This is a very good book to read. Little kids will be happy when they read this book. I think it's really nice.

The Littlest Owl Review

The Littlest Owl

I love this story! As the youngest of 2 siblings who are about 10 years my elders, I could relate when thinking back to my childhood. This is a great book for any child who has siblings, but especially for the youngest child, who might struggle to do the things older siblings can do. It also has warm, cozy, beautiful illustrations that move along with the child-centered story. There is a scene of great suspense in which The Littlest Owl must overcome apprehensions and fears. One of my favorite children's books.

Deep inside a willow tree, three newly hatched owlets curiously examine the fourth, quiet egg. Is there an owl in there, they wonder. When at last the fourth owlet struggles free, he doesn't look much like the others.
Dumpy, small, and downy white, he is left behind while his siblings learn to fly. No matter how hard he tries, he can't quite do it. "I will," he says. "Just you wait and see!"
Will the littlest owl ever grow big and strong enough to fly from the tree?
From the illustrator of five Book Sense Children's Picks comes the perfect story for any child who is a little nervous about venturing too far from home.

Mama's Little Bears Review

Mama's Little Bears
Average Reviews:

MAMA'S LITTLE BEARS is a lovely book, and one our toddler (29 months) took to immediately.
MAMA'S LITTLE BEARS is a great book for a toddler partly because it is about children stretching at boundaries. Three little bears are out fishing with their mama, and then run away to explore. This could be a little scary, at least for a toddler, except that Tafuri was smart enough to paint the Mama Bear into the background of each adventure. She is always back there, keeping an eye on them, and when something scares them enough to call for mama, she is right there.
Another lovely aspect of MAMA'S LITTLE BEARS is the pictures. These are very nice pictures of a landscape somewhere in the Pacific northwest (Oregon?). The fish that the bear fish for look like salmon. We then see a variety of interesting plants and animals as the little bears explore -- blueberries, birds (partridges? they are on the ground), otters, mice, spiders, and more. When we see animals, we often see what appear to be family groupings, which is sweet. ("Look! A mama mouse and three baby mice!"). As an adult, I would have appreciated a guide, a page at the back listing the plants and animals, so we could talk about them.
Tafuri added another detail to MAMA'S LITTLE BEARS that you can enjoy as you read this over and over, which is connections between the pictures. In each picture, you can spot some aspect of the next thing that the little bears will explore. That is something we enjoyed looking for as we read the book over and over.
MAMA'S LITTLE BEARS is fun to look at and read. Our toddler likes this one a lot!

It's Time Start Using Your Words (Transition Times Books) Review

It's Time Start Using Your Words (Transition Times Books)

I bought this a couple of weeks ago for my 2 year old son because I am trying to get him to communicate more in general. I thought it would be one of those books that I read, but wouldn't really resonate for him. Oh I was wrong. He loves it. I also like that there is enough going on in the pictures that I can extend the story and speak to it, but the artwork is simple enough to not be confusing. He went to sleep to me reading it to him, he woke up and asked me to read it to him. He loves it.
