You Are Special, Little One Review

As a children's library clerk, I see many such books in the course of my work. This is a lovely picture book; however, one thing bothers me: the baby fox is repeatedly referred to, both in the blurb and the actual text, as a 'fox cub'. Baby foxes are not cubs. They are kits. I hope this will be corrected in later editions.

Give Maggie a Chance Review

Give Maggie a Chance

One of my all time favorite books, this copy was in excellent condition. The story is priceless and the illustrations precious. Such authentic writing about how children can feel. Deals with verbal, female bullying which is very common but not often written about. Highly recommended for classroom and home use. I also use it in writing workshops as a model for great writing. It's a Canadian book so not as well known but a TRUE GEM in children's literature.

The Littlest Owl Review

The Littlest Owl
Average Reviews:

I love this story! As the youngest of 2 siblings who are about 10 years my elders, I could relate when thinking back to my childhood. This is a great book for any child who has siblings, but especially for the youngest child, who might struggle to do the things older siblings can do. It also has warm, cozy, beautiful illustrations that move along with the child-centered story. There is a scene of great suspense in which The Littlest Owl must overcome apprehensions and fears. One of my favorite children's books.

Deep inside a willow tree, three newly hatched owlets curiously examine the fourth, quiet egg. Is there an owl in there, they wonder. When at last the fourth owlet struggles free, he doesn't look much like the others.
Dumpy, small, and downy white, he is left behind while his siblings learn to fly. No matter how hard he tries, he can't quite do it. "I will," he says. "Just you wait and see!"
Will the littlest owl ever grow big and strong enough to fly from the tree?
From the illustrator of five Book Sense Children's Picks comes the perfect story for any child who is a little nervous about venturing too far from home.

Billie the Unicorn Review

Billie the Unicorn
Average Reviews:

I teach a classroom full of 4 year old boys, and I brought this book in to read. One little boy in particular was mesmerized by the drawings. Usually when I read to him, he gets bored and wants to turn the page before I finish the paragraph. This time, I would finish reading the words on the page and he would sit and stare at the drawings on the pages until I prompted him to turn the page. He especially loved the robot guards. As soon as it ended, he asked to read it again.
Some of the boys I work with live with unconventional families, so it was nice to have an example of a girl living with her cousins instead of her mom and dad. I choose this book often when reading to children who don't live with their parents.
We rotate books, and I put Billie away for a few weeks. This morning, one 4-year old saw a bean sprout we planted in the garden and he shouted "That's just like Billie's cornstalk!" Another child asked who Billie was, and they began to talk about unicorns and gardens and queens. This afternoon I got out the book and we read it three times.
I recommend this book for any classroom or family! It's sturdy, too, and has survived well with my very active boys.

I Can Do It Myself Review

I Can Do It Myself
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this for my daughters 2nd birthday. and I had no idea that it would help increase my patience with her. As a Mother of a child that stated more times then I could count "I can do it myself" a day. I found the all telling illustrations, cute repetitive text and interesting tasks the girl chose, to be very entertaining. and I believe this was one of the first books I heard my daughter read to her stuffed animal friends. While reading it I felt we came to an understanding about her ability and my need to 'let her do it'. This is one children's picture book I am glad I bought and not regretting the $ spent.

Emily Pearl can do lots of things by herself. But sometimes even resourceful little girls need help.
Emily Pearl is a very big girl. She can pour her own juice. She can tie her own shoes. She can feed her goldfish. She can even curl her own hair. Whenever her mother tries to help, Emily says, I can do it myself!
But even a very big girl like Emily can sometimes feel a teeny bit small, especially at bedtime when dark shadows creep across the walls of her bedroom. Lucky for Emily, her mom understands and gives her a helping hand.
Young children will surely recognize themselves in Diane Adams s delightful, rhyming story of one child s determined quest for independence. Nancy Hayashi s charming illustrations complement the text, colorfully capturing the chaotic ups and downs in the life of a preschooler.

Mathilda and the Orange Balloon Review

Mathilda and the Orange Balloon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Celebrity Authors TAKE NOTE: This is EXACTLY the kind of book you are trying (and repeatedly failing) to write when you take pen to hand (or fingers to keyboard). Mathilda and the Orange Balloon is a story about a limitless imagination and having the courage to believe in one's self that is told in such a deceptively simple way that even the youngest listener will delight in the story. The plot is so pure and simple and wonderfully told that it deserves to be discovered on it's own. And, as I mentioned above, the theme is a common enough one in picture books. But, don't let this dissuade you at all. As someone who has been reading picture books for decades now, out loud at work, at home to my kids and to myself, I find that I am still amazed by the author who can tell a complete story and convey a unified idea, in a matter of sentences. Maurice Sendak's classic "Where the Wild Things Are" is often noted for this quality - a quality that MATHILDA shares. On top of this superb writing by de Seve, Jen Corace delivers magnificent illustrations. Her artwork brings the words to life, but also tells a story that goes beyond the text. And, Corace's illustration style is perfectly matched to de Sève's writing style - both are simple and elegant, yet rich and satisfying.
I have already given this book as a gift and know I will give it many times more - it is a great new baby gift and a brilliant graduation gift! But, make sure you have it to read to your own kids first!

Sleep Tight, Little Bear with DVD Review

Sleep Tight, Little Bear with DVD

The story is really gentle and charming with a nice message that is relatable with young children who are starting to want to be more independent. Our 22 month old daughter can relate to all the things the little bear is doing. And the caring relationship with the parent is nicely portrayed. It is illustrated with soft watercolors. The graceful compositions and lighting make the book interesting to look at.

It's Not Fair Review

It's Not Fair
Average Reviews:

One morning recently I was reading the newspaper when I heard my wife and 10-year-old son laughing. I thought they were reading a story from the paper together. Instead they were paging through 'It's Not Fair', flipping back and forth through the pages. So while it may be a book for younger children, I can attest to the fact that anyone of any age can enjoy it. Great message, fun book, from the prolific and always entertaining Tom Lichtenheld, and the equally talented Amy Krouse Rosenthal.

Why'd I get the smaller half? Why don't you yell at her? Why does my team always lose? Why can't we have a pet giraffe? Because that's life.

And life can't always go the way we want it to. But with this delightful and witty book, Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld reassure us that everyone, including pigs, planets, and square pegs, sometimes thinks: It's not fair!

Tightrope Poppy the High-Wire Pig Review

Tightrope Poppy the High-Wire Pig
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With a clever rhyme scheme and beautiful illustrations, Poppy became an instant star at our house. The rhymes stand up to repeated readings and there is nary a stumble when reading the text out loud. Poppy, a precocious pig, believes she can be the star of the circus in a highwire act. After a few stumbles and a little self-doubt, Mom reminds her that "some dreams take lots of trying" and Poppy returns determined to reach her full potential. The message, not at all heavy-handed, has prompted my own little ones to reach for their own dreams (and not a few requests to install a highwire in our back yard.) Quick! Grab your own copy of Poppy. You won't be disappointed with the performance.

Ready, Set, Skip Review

Ready, Set, Skip
Average Reviews:

This fanciful yet real rhyming read-aloud tale of a little girl who can seemingly do EVERYTHING except skip is delightfully engaging to younger listeners and young readers, their older siblings and parents as well.
Can't we all remember when we couldn't do "something" all the "cool" kids could do?
The little girl can burp. She can slurp. She can twirl, skate leap and sometimes...she can even somersault.
In comes Mom - to give a simple suggestion which helps the little girl achieve her goal...along with the ever important phrase, "You can do it!"
The illustrations by Ann James are simple, done in a watercolor style, are very effective and non-distracting in their simplicity.
I love the fact that an older child can read this to a younger child, even Moms will enjoy listening to this one shared, unlike some read-alouds which can get annoying, this one read repeatedly will continue to be enjoyed.

A Small Surprise Review

A Small Surprise
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The little bunny looked like a little hobo with his bindlestiff over his shoulder. He was looking at a circus poster with a crudely made sign advertising for jobs. "Jobs available apply within. Small animals need not apply." Gee, he was very small, but he was also very much in need of a job. There were all kinds of BIG animals surrounding him. There was the snake who was so long he looked like he could twist himself in knots, there was a big goofy gorilla with a hat on, a rhinoceros, a lion, a bear on stilts and a wide-eyed giraffe who was really big and tall (and kind of daffy looking). Yep, he was pretty darn small.
He opened up his bindlestiff and pulled out an umbrella, some shoes and a little red ball to put on the end of his nose. "I am too small to wipe my own nose. I am too small to tie my own shoes." The goofy gorilla took a little sympathy on him and tied them for him. He walked across a tightrope, but soon grew tired. Little people and bunnies are like that. He had to have help with his food, but made a BIG mess. One thing he could do was disappear. Where do you think the little bunny who was too little to do much of anything go off to?
This is a comical book for those who, according to the author, "are too small to wipe their nose or tie their shoes or walk far without a rest . . . but not too small to make a BIG impression on others." The book was adorable and it was very amusing to see that the other grownup animals didn't quite know what to do with such a little one. The watercolors are bold and add a lot to this little story. I especially enjoyed the little scenes where the bunny is trying, without much success, to tie his shoes, only to end up on his back. If you have a little one who could use a lot of help, perhaps you are looking at a book that he or she could use your help by reading it to them!

A triumphant and endearing tale to tickle the smallest listeners.A very small bunny wants to join the circus and is not put off by a sign reading "Small Animals Need Not Apply." Though he is too small to wipe his nose or tie his shoes or walk far without a rest, he is not too small to make a BIG impression on the lion, the orangutan, and the other big animals of this circus troupe. This buoyant little tale is at turns funny, endearing, clever—and just right for the smallest child in any family. The brief text and expressive illustrations are great fun to share with a preschooler.

Big Bug Surprise Review

Big Bug Surprise
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Prunella, the protagonist of Julia Gran's compelling Big Bug Surprise is from her antennae like braids and big bug eyes down to her black and yellow bee's knees stockings, all bug. In case the reader missed the point, Gran gives us a look at her room which among other bug wonders contains an ant farm, a bee clock and mobile, a poster of a wasp ala da Vinci, and a grasshopper sculpture of The Thinker that would have made Rodin proud. The one fly in the ointment however is Prunella's total inability to interest the adult world in her bug universe. Neither her parents, the school bus driver, nor her teacher at school have any time for Prunella's passion. Her entreaties to peak their curiosity all end with the grown up intoning, " Not now, Prunella". She on the other hand persists and when it is "show and tell" day at school it is as predictable as ants at a picnic what life form she'll bring.
The members of the supporting cast in this small volume could each be the protagonist of her own book. Ms. Mantis the school teacher is all pointy elbows and nose to go along with her nettlesome personality. The bees in the story are always smiling and seem quite contented with their sweet centered existence. A wonderful spider who appears on each page is Prunella's trusty side kick much as Beaker is with his muppet pal Dr. Bunsen Honeydew.
The action virtually bounces off the pages of this fine tightly woven tale whose moral is the benefit of following one's own bliss. But don't expect me to reveal any more or what the big bug surprise might be. Go get your own copy but please, don't bug me.

Prunella loves bugs. She's always eager to share her bug knowledge, even if others don't always want to listen. So she's aflutter to shine the spotlight on one of her favorite bugs at show-and-tell. On the big day, though, Prunella's plan is squashed when a swarm of bees invades her classroom! Luckily, Prunella has an idea. And like a true queen, she leads the bees safely to a new hive. Her teacher is impressed! Her classmates cheer! But what does Prunella do? She shares more bug facts, of course, and her audience couldn't beeeee more delighted.
