(More customer reviews)I fell head over heels in love with this book. Hazen's descriptions of Soli's experience as a fosterkid, of San Francisco's neighborhoods, of the relationships Soli has with his foster sister and foster mother are heart-shattering and as real as they come.
I came to care for Soli deeply. I rooted for him, and wanted him to get away with all the trouble he creates. Which he does, sometimes. This is a REAL winner.

(More customer reviews)I wish, I wish, I wish I had read this book and heard Dr. Hughes speak before my explosive, difficult-to-parent foster son moved in. And then, reread the book again every three to six month months after that.
Fortunately, we have managed to make a lot of progress in spite of my mishandling of many situations, but how much sorrow and anguish we could have saved for both my son and myself had I understood what was going on.
For me, the book is a perfect blend of theory and example, but I do think Dr. Hughes (or someone) might consider writing some of this advice in the format of Boy's Town Foster Parent book, which is so helpful because it just tells the parent: do this. Sometimes, when the chaos is at its most intense, I need to be told what to do (kind of like my son!)
For those of you who are foster parenting and want to be reminded of what a difficult, demanding job you are doing, how important your role in the life of the child is, and that there is hope to create a loving, joyful relationshiop -- read Dr. Hughes book, and, if you can, attend a workshop. My hope, energy and commitment have been renewed. Thanks Dr. Hughes.

I Don't Have Your Eyes Review

It's wonderful, filled with sweet messages affirming the value of loving, caring, giving, listening and sharing, and illustrations showing children and care givers who don't look alike sharing day-to-day life moments. I didn't realize how much I miss seeing images of diverse families in books until I read this one. The large photos are appealing even to young children and the text is accessible to a large age range of children with messages a parent won't tire of reading. Differences between family members are not denied but the commonality of the human spirit is honored. This book is appropriate not only for adoptive families (like my own) but step-families, bi-cultural or multicultural families and families where biologically related children don't resemble one or either of their parents. It's a great book for school reading projects too as it promotes positive messages and is inclusive of children who don't look like their caregivers.

(More customer reviews)Valerie Michon is just an ordinary highschool girl. And "Rollo", "Brigg" and "Candy" are just ordinary highschool guys. Until the day that the guys decide that Valerie's a little annoying and that they might have some "harmless" fun teasing her. But the guys don't know how one thoughtless moment can change their lives, and Valerie could never know how her sense of security and optimism could be altered in the blink of an eye. This novel about sexual assualt is well-written, thought-provoking, and hard-hitting. Norma Fox Mazer keeps it suspenseful and realistic and knows just how to develop the characters. It is written in a way that makes you realize that sexual assault isn't a simple issue and we are challenged to think of the the boys as "normal", not just as monsters. In particular, "Rollo" is shown to have just "jumped on the bandwagon" and lived to regret his actions. Valerie is also portrayed well...struggling with humiliation, anger, and shame. Minor characters also add interesting and contrasting viewpoints and perspectives. To close...a well-done book on a difficult subject. Any teen should read this.
