Pig Enough Review

Pig Enough
Average Reviews:

I am a huge fan of Bynum's books and this, her latest is no exception! It's fun and funny and gave me the warm fuzzies.
Willy is an adorable Guinea Pig who wants to join the Pig Scouts. All the oinkers tell him he isn't pig enough to be real Pig Scout but little Willy proves them all wrong on a Pig Scout outing.
Adults and children both will enjoy the humorous scenes of Willy trying on his Pig Scout uniform and attempting piggy activities.
A perfect picture book that is pig enough for all!

Charlie Sykes, once again, proves that common sense isn't completely dead.
A few examples:
Rule #1: Life is not fair. Get use to it.
Rule #9: Your school may have done away with winners and losers. Life hasn't.
Rule #14: Looking like a slut does not empower you.
Rule #30: Zero tolerance=zero common sense.
Rule #35: If your butt has its own zip code, it's not because McDonald's forced you to eat all those Big Macs. If you smoke, it's not Joe Camel's fault.
Rule #36: You are not immortal.
Some simple truisms that could benefit both kids, and adults!

The Empowerment Approach to Social Work Practice Review

This, the second edition, is one of the best practice books in social work to come out in a long time. Using a multifocal vision, this book spells out the principles of empowerment as a method. This is the kind of book that makes you want to know the author personally because of the human touch that is provided; this book is very readable too.The subtitle--Building the Beloved--speaks for itself. I appreciated the up-to-date references and statistics. An excellent reference book for instructors and social workers interested in the empowerment approach.

Don't Take My Lemonade Stand: An American Philosophy Review

Don't Take My Lemonade Stand: An American Philosophy
Average Reviews:

Janie Johnson's Don't Take My Lemonade Stand is a conservative mom's best new tool in parenting. She has provided a very detailed yet easy to read book that anyone can benefit from reading. As a busy parent, we know what we know and why, but it is so hard to put it in terms that our kids will easily understand. Janie has done all the hard work, superbly annotated; she has gone through the research and put it all together for parents to share with their kids. Many times, we get one side of politics but she goes the extra mile to put down why those on the other side of the fence believe the way that they do. Most books right now focus on what is wrong with our world; Janie provides an uplifting, positive book with optimistic quotes, cartoons and questions to initiate further discussion with your kids. I highly recommend this book for anyone, young or old, that wants a clear understanding of history, politics and where we can be with a little more lemonade in our life! Thank you Janie!!

Teach your children to think for themselves and why America is great. With 51 captioned illustrations, 11 parables that teach lessons of life, and Questions for Kids at the end of each major section, Don't Take My Lemonade Stand - An American Philosophy is written to help parents teach their children. We as parents have the obligation to take charge of who is teaching our children and what our children are being taught.
This book is for those that believe in the preeminence of children, the vigorous expression of patriotism, and the power of clear-eyed optimism. Janie Johnson says ''The strength of our country resides in the minds of our children, and the future of our country will be found in their actions.''
There's no question that our political system has become corrupt and politicians -- on both sides of the aisle -- are voting in favor of the special interests that donated to them instead of the citizens who elected them. They have all contributed to the abandonment of the Common Sense Conservative principles upon which our country was founded and under which we have prospered.
Don't Take My Lemonade Stand: An American Philosophy is the book that tells where we came from, how out-of-control, big government/big spending policies are driving us to ruin, and exactly what we the people can do to take back our country right here, right now, and get it back on course to peace, prosperity, and opportunity.

Education and Identity (Josse Bass Higher and Adult Education) Review

Education and Identity (Josse Bass Higher and Adult Education)
Average Reviews:

Chickering and Reisser's theory is a highly important, classic theory about how college students develop personally and interpersonally throughout their college years. This volume is on many of the shelves of student affairs professionals across the nation and should be on the shelves of the others. It can also help others who work with college students -- and perhaps even their parents -- understand some of the normal developmental patterns experienced by traditionally aged college students during their college years. The theory isn't perfect, and it could use some revision. It would be nice to have a new edition of the book with a revised theory. Still, this classic work has, and should have a central role in the study of college students for years to come.

Arthur Chickering and Linda Reisser have produced an intelligent and penetrating scholarly work that is a worthy sequel to its distinguished predecessor. If the history of Education and Identity is any indication, this second edition will take its place among the classics in higher education literature.?Ernest T. Pascarella, professor of educational psychology, the University of Illinois, ChicagoThis completely revised and updated edition of Chickering's classic work presents new findings from the last twenty-five years and describes policies and practices in higher education that will foster the broad-based development of human talent essential to our society in the 21st century.

What Happy Working Mothers Know: How New Findings in Positive Psychology Can Lead to a Healthy and Happy Work/Life Balance Review

What Happy Working Mothers Know: How New Findings in Positive Psychology Can Lead to a Healthy and Happy Work/Life Balance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a working father, generally happy, but currently more grumpy than usual: the economy, the weather (Chicago winter approaches) and my dear son's evolution into dictatorial toddler. This book has done wonders for my mood, my approach to life and my plans.
I actually like the fact that its teaching is in multiple narratives--central text interspersed with sidebars, charts and sketches--because these "bite-sized" nuggets of empathy, heroism, and yes, sheer wisdom, are perfect for busy working parents. I read it in spurts, dive back to recall a lesson, true story or insight and hold it in my head for the day.
Another reviewer complained that this book repeats the "What Happy People Know" messages. Sure it does. That's the point. Those messages are timeless truths that are worth repeating. In this book they've been synthesized and adapted for working parents. I really appreciate that, even though I usually don't read books that claim to speak to just one of the many roles I play in life. I usually steer away from something so specific--a whole book about happy working mothers? No thanks! Smug people who have figured out how to raise kids, succeed at work, honor your spouse and love yourself? Please, take your success stories elsewhere! I was so wrong. Greenberg and Avigdor share their lessons in happiness for all to learn. And they do it gently, positively and transparently. I've been humbled.
I share this book with parents who need uplifting and I recommend others to do so. And who doesn't need uplifting now and again? I'm a better man for having read this book.

Gloria Rising Review

Gloria Rising

It's has been very difficult trying to find books for my twin 8yr old daughters.
I wanted a series of books with the star character being an African American girl just having fun and doing kid stuff. A book that will make them know that reading is fun. This book does just that and more.
If you're looking for a great chapter book for an African American girl, then author Ann Cameron's "Gloria Rising" and "Gloria's Way" is it.
Also, try Valerie Wilson Wesley's series of "Willimena Rules".

The Well-Educated Mind: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had Review

The Well-Educated Mind: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I typically buy 75-100 books a year through Amazon[.com] and spend hours and hours reading reviews before I ultimately make my purchase. When I [got]Bauer's book, I just couldn't put it down. Not only does she lay out in detail the necessary steps in developing an appreciation and understanding for the "Great Books of Civilization" she actually shows you how to do it and gives you an abundant of resources to aid you if you need more help. Not since Mortimer Adler's book "How to Read a Book" have I ever come across such a lucid approach to raising one's awareness of the world's greatest writers.

In addition to laying out the groundwork for setting up a self-study program, Bauer provides a detailed approach to each of her recommended readings, from "The Epic of Gilgamesh, c. 2000 B.C. to Elie Wiesel's "All Rivers Run to the Sea", 1995.

A warning however for the "undisciplined mind". Unless you are prepared to commit the necessary time (Bauer recommends 30 minutes a day, 4 days a week) to do some "really serious reading" using a personalized "commonplace book" (which she describes in detail) to record your learnings and critiques -- you are wasting your time. It's akin to losing 25 pounds through disciplined dieting or getting out of debt in 12 months through focused efforts. You either commit yourself to a life-long learning plan to raise your consciousness and self-awarness or simply go back and waste away by watching T.V. and munching on your doritos. The choice is yours.

Diary of a Fairy Godmother Review

Diary of a Fairy Godmother
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
DIARY OF A FAIRY GODMOTHER is told in first person by Hunky Dory, a young witch who attends Harbinger's Charm School for Young Witches. Hunky is at the head of her class in charm school. She can turn princes into dragons and make teacups and hats appear out of thin air. Her classmates are jealous of Hunky's ability to cast any spell without disaster. Her mother, a brewer of magic potions, thinks Hunky will grow up to be the most wicked witch wherever the four winds blow.
It isn't long before trouble begins. At first, her classmate, Frantic Search, notices Hunky undoing an evil charm. Then Hunky is invited to a baby christening at the castle. She watches fairy godmothers giving wonderful gifts to the newborn baby. After her Auntie casts a wicked spell on the new baby, Hunky uses her magic to undo the spell. When she does, she gets a warm, tingling sensation all over her body. She wonders if it would be possible to become a fairy godmother herself.
When Hunky's mother, Auntie, and Mrs. Harbinger learn that Hunky is considering changing careers, they try to discourage her. Despite their efforts, Hunky is more determined than ever to try granting wishes for a living. She sets up shop in the bottom of a wishing well and grants wishes to people who toss down coins. Eventually, Hunky decides that she wants to become a real fairy godmother, but it will take the help of a special girl named Cinderella to make it happen.
Esme Raji Codell, who has worked as a teacher, a children's librarian, and a bookseller, is the author of two previous books for children: SING A SONG OF TUNA FISH: Hard-to-Swallow Stories From Fifth Grade, and SAHARA SPECIAL, which was the winner of the IRA Children's Book Award.
DIARY OF A FAIRY GODMOTHER is a clever addition to her growing body of work. It is a story about empowerment and making things happen rather than just waiting and wishing for them to happen.

Like one of the other reviewers of this series of books, I found that my dyslexic daughter was not particularly interested in my telling her stories about "famous dyslexics" or in having any kind of dialogue about the issue (she's 8 yrs old). However, she absolutely LOVED these books. They are non-threatening, not too "teachy", and the illustrations are wonderful. My daughter has enjoyed the entire series, but after reading this book in particular, she decided she wanted to go to the library (like the main character)and do some research on dyslexia. This is a huge step!
This is the only book in the series that specifically mentions a term - dyslexia. The other books deal more in generalities--trouble with timed math facts and memorization, poor handwriting and attention deficit. However, I think many children will see themselves in at least one of these stories, and a child like mine may see parts of herself (or himself) in every book. I like the fact that the books are non-specific. They don't spend word space on labels and diagnoses and symptomology. They simply discuss the challenges a child faces in the classroom from a child's point of view. And THAT is what makes them so accessible and wonderful for our kids. I highly, highly recommend this entire series of books for any child with learning differences.

My son received all the books in this series for Christmas. He loved them so much. I searched for the right book to give him for a few months, and I am so glad I picked these. He really seemed to connect with them. I think he is so used to everything being so formal when it comes to myself and his teachers talking about the way he learns. These are the first books that took him to a place all to himself, a place where he could connect as a kid. I love these books, and if you have a child with a different learning style these are the books for them!

You would have thought that telling my child over and over (and over!)again that other children, and me his mother, have the same struggles with learning math would have made him feel a little less alone in the 3rd grade math world, but it didn't. A parent can only tell a child that everyone learns differently so much. After my son read this book he finally believed me! We talked about how I was when I was a child and how I even have struggle now. Reading this book has opened up this connection with my son that i never thought possible. He saw himself in this book; he made connections that finally turned the switch on for him. Thank you Barb for thinking of our children and creating these great books!
