Fabulosity: What It Is and How to Get It Review

Fabulosity: What It Is and How to Get It

I love hip-hop music and I love shopping, but as a woman gets older, she learns that it's just not cute to have "Bootylicious" on her butt or the name brand in 15 different spots on her shirt. This is why I like Baby Phat clothes, it's hip-hop, it's sporty, but it's classy. I have more Baby Phat jeans than necessary and a few shirts too! So when I heard about her book, I just knew I'd love it. But here's the problem...I feel the same way about Kimora Lee Simmons as I do about India Arie. When I went to see India Arie at the Taste of Chicago, she kept prancing around stage singing "I'm #1." In awards shows, India said things like "I always think I'm going to win..." As much as I'm a fan of her music, I'd never buy it because her ego is out of control. Reading this book made me feel the same way about Kimora. She kept on pointing out how she could do unprofessional things (wear stilettos to work, show up late, yell, talk over people, have modeling shows with people who are not wearing your clothes and front like it's Baby Phat) but coaxing her readers into doing the exact opposite. Every time she said something contradictory, she'd say "But I can do that, because I'm the boss" or "But look at me now!" After awhile, I was rolling my eyes and looking at my stove trying to figure out how to mail her a bucketload of humble pie. I respect women who are confident, but being vain is a complete turn-off. Halfway through the book, I gave up. Maybe it ended on a down-to-earth note, but I couldn't handle it anymore.
She didn't cover how she met Russel Simmons and how they helped each other in business; only stated that she likes to beat him economically. She didn't talk about how she went about picking her staff, only talked about how young they were. She didn't talk about how she chose her clothes, only dogged the clothes that Russell and Run chose. Her idea of showing feelings was talking about how she beat somebody up for knocking her Chanel purse out of her hands or not speaking to her when she was with her husband. It was really juvenile to me--I was waiting for her to tell me something deep. I felt like she was barking orders at me through the book and finally said "Forget it." I will continue to buy her clothes because I love them, but as for this book, nah, I just can't do it.

Now, in this uplifting and inspiring book, Simmons spills her secrets of how women can use their smarts to build a rich and satisfying life full of success, fun, and, yes, a bit of blinding bling, the "Fabulosity" that every woman deserves.Simmons explains how to balance feminine, stop-them-in-their-tracks glamour with sign-on-the-dotted-line business power; how to get past barriers that exist because of gender, race, or age; how to find a marriageable man who'll support your biggest dreams (while keeping other women at bay); and how to have the most fun of your life while doing it! She gives hundreds of insider tips on fashion, beauty, home decorating, and socializing and explains how she succeeded in business with little formal experience, building a $70 million business out of a T-shirt. Packed with anecdotes and first-person experiences from the catwalks of Paris to P. Diddy's parties, "Fabulosity" takes readers behind the scenes of this diva's diverse, action-packed life and offers insights on how any woman can channel her own "high-profile personality" and creative power, no matter what her own goals may be.

The New Elite: Inside the Minds of the Truly Wealthy Review

The New Elite: Inside the Minds of the Truly Wealthy
Average Reviews:

It has been said that the wealthy are different. Well, not so much. In fact, according the in-depth study done by the authors of this book, the wealthy came not from wealth but from middle class backgrounds. They therefore have all of the middle class ethics and needs, wants and desires.
Yet within the wealthy, there are differences. From first becoming wealthy to having had wealth over a decade or more, money brings different meaning to the groups within the wealthy.
If you're a marketer, you should read this book. I came to it as someone who makes a living understanding different groups and how to sell to them. To that end, I got a good deal of useful information from the book.
You'll learn what they read, what they buy, how they feel about their wealth and money in general. You'll learn far more about them by reading this book than anything you might see on television.
It is full of research. It has lots of facts and figures and very little editorializing, which I like. This is by far the most interesting and best written book on this subject that I've read and I highly recommend it to you.
- Susanna K. Hutcheson

The Brand You 50 : Or : Fifty Ways to Transform Yourself from an 'Employee' into a Brand That Shouts Distinction, Commitment, and Passion Review

The Brand You 50 : Or : Fifty Ways to Transform Yourself from an 'Employee' into a Brand That Shouts Distinction, Commitment, and Passion

I remember an anecdote about a young writer who sent a manuscript to a famous author asking for criticism and advice (I forget who the famous author was. Faulkner?). The author graciously sent back a long, detailed reply which contained a nugget that I remember to this day. The author said, "You should be more judicious in your use of exclaimation points. A writer only gets to use three of them in his career." Meaning, of course, that if you overemphasize every other sentence, how to you get the reader to understand the importance of something that really needs the emphasis? If you have to use italics and caps and exclamation points to get your point across, you're choosing the wrong words.
Which brings us to Mr. Peters. If you're looking for some interesting and useful advice on how to market yourself and your career, this book is quite good. Peters does drive me up the wall a bit with his relentlessly energetic and optimistic tone, but he does give good advice. I don't think Tom takes into account how resistant some workplaces are to people who behave like he tells us to, and his irritating call to make everything you work on a "WOW" project makes me wonder if he knows what it's like to man the front-line trenches of corporate America. But again, what he writes is worth reading.
What I find fault with is the how Peters says it. He can't write a sentence without words in ALL CAPITALS and italics (which, alas, I can't show you in an Amazon review). And, of course, Peters loves exclamation points!!!! In fact the logo of his company is an exclamation point!!! He uses enough exclamation points that there is NO WAY to tell what is just ROUTINE INFORMATION and what is VERY, VERY IMPORTANT. See how INCREDIBLY IRRITATION this is??!!! Read "The Brand You 50" and you find all sorts of good info, but you'll have to hack through an ENTIRE BOOK that is written LIKE THIS!!!!!!!

You've been able to stay alcohol and drug free for a period of time, but something's still missing. Addiction is a physical, spiritual, and emotional disease. Detox deals with the physical aspect, and a 12-step or some other type of spiritually based program teaches you how to remain abstinent. But what about the emotional or mental challenges that must be overcome? Are you ready to move beyond financial scarcity? Are you floundering in an unfulfilling career or personal relationship? These real-world challenges often lead to an uninspired, mediocre recovery and can be major contributors to relapse. It's time to move forward, discover your life's purpose, and reach your full potential. This book is designed to help you design an action plan, create momentum, and achieve results. The universal truths presented here have taken me from being a low-bottom alcoholic/addict to a successful entrepreneur and author with twenty years of continuous sobriety. The suggestions and exercises I present have worked for me and countless others. They will work for you if you choose to let them. So you're sober; what's next? No doubt you achieved sobriety with guidance from someone who knew how to get and stay sober. I speak your language; let me do the same for you on the next step to full recovery. I have read and loved a couple other books by this Author. I mean I really liked them so when I saw this new work I snapped it up. I'm very disappointed. I can't say it is an awful book obviously other people on here love it. But what I found was chapter after chapter of the same message packaged in a different way. When it said 50 Simple Truths to Transform Your Attitudes and Actions into Results, that is what I expected. To me I found a few simple truths and no actions for results. But then again I'm not big on optimism or pessimism per se, I think being a positive realist works best. Just not for me.

Blind Spots: Achieve Success by Seeing What You Can't See Review

Blind Spots: Achieve Success by Seeing What You Can't See
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

As Claudia Shelton explains in the Preface, the material in her book is organized around "three simple focuses": guidance to the development of the perspective and mindset necessary to "see things about yourself that you previously couldn't see" (i.e. blind spots), strategies to help convert these blind spots into strengths on which to build success, and provision of a set of tools "to help identify personal information about one's specific blind spots." I appreciate Shelton's skillful use of several reader-friendly devices such as the statement of a key concept for each of the chapters which comprise one of the six Sections. For example, for Section Four, these are "The Strategies for Clear Sight":
Chapter 11: Identify what you do best in a "Statement of Strengths"
Chapter 12: Check counter-productive habits using an "Old Habits Blind Spots Grid"
Chapter 13: Convert stress into a positive source of energy
Chapter 14: "Tune your radar" to recognize non-verbal "clues" sent to others
Chapter 15: "Connect" more effectively with others to strengthen relationships
As these strategies correctly indicate, Shelton offers no head-snapping revelations (nor does she claims to offer any); in these and other chapters, she identifies the "what" and then devotes most of her attention to the "why" and "how." For that reason, she thoughtfully extensive material that can guide and inform a series of self-audits to help each reader determine the nature and extent of the gap between her or his current level or recognition and what is desired. In Chapter 15, for example, Shelton identifies and briefly discusses five of the most common causes of disconnection that include disengagement. That is, "not speaking clearly, not listening to what others have to say, [and] not providing useful feedback," any/all of which can prevent a convincing presentation of ideas. To paraphrase The Golden Rule, "Others will do unto you the way you tend to do unto them."
Many readers will be especially grateful for the Appendix that Shelton provides. In it, she offers brief descriptions of all recommended "tools"(with a handy page reference for each), a brief review of the five most common blind spots, and summary descriptions of nine models that comprise the "Blind Spots Profile." The ultimate objective is to develop the strengths while reducing (if not eliminating) the weaknesses of each, such as what Shelton rather clumsily characterizes as the "Optimistic Image-Oriented Producer" who tends to rend feelings first, is extroverted, is a high-energy multi-tasker who produces many projects valued by others but who can sometimes be disorganized and indecisive and, when under pressure, become distant (i.e. "disengaged") and thereby alienate others.
Make no mistake about it: What Shelton recommends in her book requires a full commitment of time, energy, and attention over an extended period of time, although those who carefully absorb and digest the material and then begin to identify their blind spots will immediately increase their understanding of themselves and probably of others, also. It is important to keep in mind that some blind spots are easier to recognize than others. Also, that certain revelations about one's self (i.e. one's inadequacies and their consequences, to date) will probably not be pleasant but are nonetheless especially important. Be grateful for having eliminated, finally, what have probably been the worst blind spots.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Lynda Gratton Hot Spots: Why Some Teams, Workplaces, and Organizations Buzz with Energy - And Others Don't, Michael Useem `s The Go Point: When It's Time to Decide--Knowing What to Do and When to Do It by, Howard Gardner `s Five Minds for the Future, and Tom Rath's StrengthsFinder 2.0: A New and Upgraded Edition of the Online Test from Gallup's Now, Discover Your Strengths.

Year to Success is a refreshing and unique perspective on getting what you want from life. The step by step formula keeps you interested and engaged, but more important, it keeps you motivated to ACT. It is evident that the author speaks from real world success. It is also clear that the purpose of this book is truly to help others get what they want out of life as opposed to just another book to get the writer some notoriety and attention. From someone who's achieved a great deal of success in my own life, I can tell you I'm learning A LOT from this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to live a successful life that has meaning and purpose.

Like one of the other reviewers of this series of books, I found that my dyslexic daughter was not particularly interested in my telling her stories about "famous dyslexics" or in having any kind of dialogue about the issue (she's 8 yrs old). However, she absolutely LOVED these books. They are non-threatening, not too "teachy", and the illustrations are wonderful. My daughter has enjoyed the entire series, but after reading this book in particular, she decided she wanted to go to the library (like the main character)and do some research on dyslexia. This is a huge step!
This is the only book in the series that specifically mentions a term - dyslexia. The other books deal more in generalities--trouble with timed math facts and memorization, poor handwriting and attention deficit. However, I think many children will see themselves in at least one of these stories, and a child like mine may see parts of herself (or himself) in every book. I like the fact that the books are non-specific. They don't spend word space on labels and diagnoses and symptomology. They simply discuss the challenges a child faces in the classroom from a child's point of view. And THAT is what makes them so accessible and wonderful for our kids. I highly, highly recommend this entire series of books for any child with learning differences.
