Procrastination and Blocking Review

Procrastination and Blocking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge fan of Robert Boice and believe that his thoughts about how to overcome procrastination and writer's block are seminal. He is one of the few people who has done research on how to help people overcome procrastination and increase their scholarly productivity.
However, unless you are (like me) a Boice addict, I would suggest starting with his other works -- especially "Professors as Writers" and "Advice to New Faculty Members". Most of his books are quite repetitive and rather plodding -- but his ideas are life-changing.
I'm a clinical psychologist and professional coach and I use his theories and interventions all the time when I counsel students, faculty and fiction writers.

The Secret to Life Transformation: How to Claim Your Destiny Now Review

The Secret to Life Transformation: How to Claim Your Destiny Now
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In my opinion, The Secret to Life Transformation does not fulfill its promise of delivering the secret to life transformation. For that matter I do not believe it offers any real new insights into life transformation.
The book is actually a collection of essays by 12 very diverse but somewhat famous people. Most of the authors were well known in their field but certainly not household names.
Because the book is a collection of writings by different authors, it does not have a consistent voice. The lessons presented in each essay do not drive toward a common method for transformation. The theme is very loosely connected. While each attempts to tell how they transformed their lives, there is no system or step by step process for others to follow. There are some nuggets of wisdom scattered throughout the book.
Some of the essays are fairly interesting. It is always interesting to learn how a person rose to the top against some steep odds. But what I was looking more for guiding principles rather than the widely varied stories.
A high percentage of the stories have a significant religious foundation. Some people may object to the strong religious leanings.
Judge Sol Wachter takes a bit of a detour discussing the criminal justice system's handing of mentally disturbed inmates. While there is no denying the huge social problem and the fact that it is inadequately handled, I felt this veered off course. It created a distraction rather than giving additional insight into how to transform one's life.
If you are interested in reading 12 loosely connected stories of how some people rose from very difficult conditions to transform their lives, then this would be a good book. On the other hand, if you are looking for a how-to guide to transforming your own live, this will probably be a bit of a disappointment.

Total Leadership: Be a Better Leader, Have a Richer Life Review

Total Leadership: Be a Better Leader, Have a Richer Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I took two intercontinental flights recently and took the time to go through the "Total Leadership" program. And, before I begin my review, I want to say that over the past ten years or so I've seen an absolute avalanche of "leadership" books come out - most of them gimmicky and useless. This is not one of them and in fact I believe the title may deter people from purchasing this; do not be one of them.
"Total Leadership" is about finding your way when you have multiple responsibilities tugging you in different directions. Until now, I've often felt family pulling me one way, only to find the more time I spend with them the more I resent the time it takes away from work. Similarly, on business trips for example, I fight with feelings of guilt for being away from my family. And that's not to mention the the toll all of this takes on my health, when I'm too busy to exercise or just watch the game with friends. I'm here to say this book can help, like finding the long lost manual and finally figuring our how to do new things with a product, this book acts as a guide to finding a semblance of control in your life. It's not about sacrifice, and it's definitely not found in the idea of "balance", this book advocates a powerful third way: overlapping your domains and drawing boundaries.
What makes this book especially effective are the exercises the author puts the reader through. The reader is asked to define the issue, starting with the multiple responsibilities and challenges s/he faces, then it moves on to defining your domains, where is it that you spend your time? Most of the readers (including myself) would find four areas: self, family, work and community. Then, with domains defined, you can identify stakeholders in each domain and begin the process of finding ways "to live your life in accord with what really matters to you." The reader is asked to discuss his/her vision for a future life (post-change) with trusted individuals s/he has previously identified. A particularly effective step is then speaking with others about living your life differently, such as: your boss, significant other and friends, and getting their opinion and feedback on your plan, and as difficult and challenging as this may be it ends up providing the most powerful incentive to change through accountability and stakeholder buy-in. In many cases, I found that as much as I was building bridges between domains in my life, I was also creating boundaries (for example, no longer do I check my blackberry or the Internet between the hours of 6pm - 9pm.) But some of the biggest changes are personal ones that are for me and my family, other readers will likely find similar decisions they make without necessarily sharing them.
This book is not about easy decisions, or difficult ones, its about drilling down to what's most important in your life and building from there.
Ultimately, this book is required reading once, in my opinion, you are put in a position of responsibility. It is effective in maintaining a mindset conducive to responsible living, it provides a non-cookie cutter approach and it creates change in your life through practical exercises.
For these reasons, this reviewer highly recommends "Total Leadership."

The Next Level: What Insiders Know About Executive Success, 2nd Edition Review

The Next Level: What Insiders Know About Executive Success, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

As an executive coach, I really like Scott's book. I have successfully used it as a reference with clients . Overall it is an easy read with a simple and applicable framework. I think it is one of those books you could give an exec and she/he would actually read it and would be able to apply it. It is tough to find a book that has enough substance but won't overwhelm a casual reader. This one fits the bill.

After the thrill of promotion to an executive position comes the sobering reality of just how difficult it is to succeed at this level-and how hard it can be to find help. Some 40 percent of new executives don't last 18 months. Why do so many employees with strong track records derail when promoted to the executive suite? In The Next Level, Scott Eblin draws on 20 years of experience as a leader and executive coach to identify why new executives fail, and offers a practical program for achieving success. Rising executives must understand that the strengths and actions that drove their career progress at lower levels-such as technical prowess-will not necessarily sustain their success as executives. They need to pick up new behaviors and beliefs, and, more important, let go of old ones.

Anthony, the Perfect Monster (Step Into Reading. Step 2 Book) Review

Anthony, the Perfect Monster (Step Into Reading. Step 2 Book)
Average Reviews:

Angelo DeCesare validates feelings real kids have by allowing his main character, Anthony, to be angry, sad, lonesome and happy - whatever the appropriate emotion is at the time.
As a reading specialist, I have read this book with elementary school children. They find Anthony to be a very engaging character. They love when he turns into a monster and goes to school. They easily relate to being teased by other students because they are different.
The book is great for initiating converstions about feelings and appropriate and unacceptable reactions to how one is feeling.

As a Man Thinketh (Family Inspirational Library) Review

As a Man Thinketh (Family Inspirational Library)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This excellent compilation of essays by James Allen truly holds the key to success, amongst other things! I feel so inspired after reading this book, so ready to put into practice what this powerful, little book is teaching. This "classic" has been around since the turn of the century and it seems to be even more relevant in today's stressful and competitive society. I underlined so many wonderful and inspiring passages that I intend to refer to on a daily basis. As Allen states, "a man is literally what he thinks", or as the saying goes, garbage in, garbage out! Or put another way, "All that a man achieves and all that he fails to achieve is the direct result of his own thoughts."
I have learned that I cannot blame others for my life, or my state of affairs - they are my creation, the end product of my thoughts and actions. Allen states that man makes or unmakes himself by the thoughts he keeps and cultivates. Man is truly is his own worst enemy!
I really resonated to his quote on fear, "Thoughts of doubt and fear never accomplish anything, and never can. They always lead to failure. Purpose, energy, power to do, and all strong thoughts cease when doubt and fear creep in." How profound and how true. How we let fear run our lives - again proving how powerful our thoughts can be. Allen further expounds by saying, "He who has conquered doubt and fear has conquered failure."
The garden of our mind is only cultivated by us. What kind of crop we want to consistently yield is solely determined on our positive, enriching, and encouraging thoughts or on our doubting, destructive and negative ones. We alone hold the key to our future, and our success, and our attainments in life. We can either have a feast or a famine - it is only up to us.
This highly inspirational book cannot help but to motivate you in some degree. I feel like I have been given the keys to a door that was once rusty and would not open, but now will yield freely in my hand. Another great quote is, "The Vision that you glorify in your mind, the Ideal that you enthrone in your heart - this you will build your life by, this you will become." This is one book that you will want to keep constantly by your side, especially for those times when you get discouraged, or when the road seems rough. Just reading one page will have you having a change of heart, with its motivation putting you back on that right path.
This book is a MUST read if you are desiring to change your negatives into positives! The power of the mind is incredible - in all areas of our life!

Allen's practical philosophy of successful living has awakened millions to the discovery and perception of the truth that "they themselves are makers of themselves". Building on the Bible verse. I just got this book for my 22 month-old daughter because she loved the illustrations and the title. It is very short and sweet, but has a cute message about how a child gets his or her features from their family. It also has a VERY subtle message about multi-cultural families. A great book for any child, but especially good for children that are constantly told that the look just like other members of the family! Very cute and beautiful pictures!

What's Your Body Telling You? Listening To Your Body's Signals to Stop Anxiety, Erase Self-Doubt and Achieve True Wellness Review

What's Your Body Telling You Listening To Your Body's Signals to Stop Anxiety, Erase Self-Doubt and Achieve True Wellness
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Every once in awhile, you come across a book and its concept hits home like no other. What's Your Body Telling You? is that book. How many times have you told yourself, "If I had only listened to my gut." That's because your body never lies and is always communicating with you, letting you know why you're reacting to something or what's the best decision to make. So many times we let our brains take over or our heart lead us in the wrong direction and end up regretting something, thinking, gee, I should have listened to my body. Finally, there's a book that teaches us how to do just that.
Therapist and author Steve Sisgold will teach you how to discover ways to achieve Whole Body Consciousness -- a broadened state of mind that helps you see your fears and desires, then takes appropriate steps toward genuine fulfillment. Instead of just counseling the reader, which he does so genuinely, Sisgold takes you on his personal journey and others, giving real life examples how listening to your body can change your life. You'll find yourself often thinking, "That sounds like me" or "I know that I do that!" throughout the book. Whether it be in relationships or more success with your career, these exercises and stories will teach readers how to stop over-thinking and start trusting their natural instincts. Our bodies always let us know when we're unhappy, tense, uncomfortable, or unsure. So isn't it time we start listening to our bodies more, especially during these challenging times?
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Steve Sisgold live and hearing him educate the crowd on how listening to their bodies can change their lives. As a longtime member of the press and now the head of a publicity company, I've heard a lot of self-help authors talk and share their ideas. Most leading experts teach us techniques with the mind, though, whereas Sisgold does just the opposite -- he shows you how to get out of your head and into your body. It makes the most sense, yet we've forgotten how to listen and trust our bodies and overthinking takes over. Well, ask yourself how that's been working for you over the years? Whatever you want to create in your life, this book will teach you how to move forward and erase self doubt and old patterns. I've already read the book twice and there are few pages that don't have something highlighted as a reminder for myself! Do yourself a life-changing favor and buy this book today.

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY : Self Reliance and the Accountable Life Review

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY : Self Reliance and the Accountable Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The word "responsibility" carries an unfortunate moralistic implication, which Branden takes pains to dispel repeatedly throughout this book. Nevertheless, a light reading of this important work may create a false impression in the reader that Branden's term "Self-Responsibility" does in fact mean a moralistic responsibility. This is the major problem that haunts this work.
Even with this flaw, this is one of Branden's more important books. It is brilliant and profound. It is a book to read and re-read at regular intervals throughout one's life. Two of the most important chapters are "Self Reliance and Social Metaphysics" and "Self-Responsibility and Romantic Love". Both of these themes appeared in his earlier "The Psychology of Self-Esteem". In particular the concept of social metaphysics is one of the most vital to understand in attempting to gain true psychological freedom and intellectual sovereignty. In my own case, had I just taken the time to understand how social metaphysics was impacting my decision to seek a divorce, I might been able to save my marriage.
The Introduction to this book is by itself almost worth the price of the entire book. It contains indispensible advice for finding true happiness in life. It also shows Brandon's essential modesty, as he credits his wife for these important insights.
