Noni Says No Review

Noni Says No
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm an elementary school counselor and have not seen many books like this that address being able to say no in a social situation. Lots of kids put up with bad behavior in their friendships because they are afraid if they say "no" they will hurt the other person's feelings and lose them as a friend. As we read, a student pointed out, "Well, if they don't want to be your friend anymore because of that - they weren't your true friend in the first place." Ahhh....music to my ears!
Noni can't say no to Susie because she fears there will be a confrontation or maybe it will end the friendship. Susie on the other hand has no problem saying no. In fact, maybe she needs to learn to be a little more balanced and say yes. It even gets to the point where Noni allows Susie to cut off all of her hair! I kind of appreciated the extreme example. If you don't say no, you can be putting yourself in an awful situation. But Noni finally reaches her limit and has to say no. Before I turned the page to show Susie's reaction we talked about how a good friend should respond when they are told no. So do Noni's fears come true? No, they don't. Susie simply says, "Okay." Just like a good friend should.
This will be in my personal home library as well as at school. It's important to me to raise a kind child, but I worry that in the process some kids can become pushovers. A well balanced child should be empowered to say yes and no in social situations.

Noni can do many things: she can give her baby brother his bottle, she can help her mother in the kitchen, and she can even walk over to her friend Susie's house. But Noni just can't say "no." When she was very small, it was easy saying "no" to everybody, but now that she has a best friend, she wants to please. Noni can't say "no" to her friend, even when it means she has to hand over a precious toy, or when it means agreeing to a hideous haircut, or even giving up her bed at a sleepover. But when Noni finally finds her voice, the consequences are not what she – or the reader – expects.Heather Hartt-Sussman's story, complemented by the playful illustrations of Geneviève Côté, is a comforting exploration of friendship and of the importance of trusting one's own judgment. Many children (as well as many adults) will root for Noni as she learns that you can stand up for yourself and still be a good friend.

I am a big fan of Arthur Samuel Joseph. I have listened to his 3-CD set audio program VOICE OF A LEADER at least four times now. Every time I listen to it, I get more richness and insight from his work. I have purchased the CD set and given it to several of my clients for their leadership development. My recent purchase of his book VOCAL POWER has brought additional depth and action in this important work for vocal development. I look forward to the day when I can attend a workshop taught by Mr. Joseph himself. Until then, his wonderful books and audio training CD's are the tools that I will be leveraging for my professional development as a speaker, trainer, coach and leader. I suggest you do the same. It's a great investment in your career, business and life! - Kathy McAfee, America's Marketing Motivator and author of Networking Ahead for BusinessVocal Power: Harnessing the Power Within

Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon Review

Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Molly Lou Melon is the shortest girl in the first grade, has buck teeth that stick out so far she can stack pennies on them and has a voice like a bull frog squeezed by a boa constrictor. But she also has a very wise Grandma who has always told her to walk proudly, smile big, sing out loud and clear and "Believe in yourself and the world will believe in you too!" Unfortunately, her family moves away from Grandma and now Molly Lou Melon has to go to first grade in a new school. And on her first day she meets Ronald Durkin, class bully. He calls her shrimpo and bucky-tooth-beaver and follows her around calling out honk-honk and making fun of her schoolwork. But Molly Lou remembers everything her Grandma told her and soon Ronald Durkin is put firmly in his place..... Patty Lovell has written an uplifting and engaging picture book with a gentle message that won't be lost on young readers. Her simple, yet powerful text is complemented by David Catrow's bold, bright and joyous artwork and together they've authored a terrific story that's summed up on the book's last page, in Molly Lou's letter to her Grandma..."Everything you told me was exactly right." Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon is a treasure you'll want to read and share, told with great insight, wisdom and humor.

Take a Kiss to School Review

Take a Kiss to School
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Digby is a little otter who is starting kindergarten. Well, in fact, he's already started it. He had a great first day of school, actually, but he's nervous about the second day. He's worried he's forgotten everything that he needs to do, and he just wants to stay home with his mom. Of course, that isn't going to work, but his mom has an idea. He can take a kiss to school -- well, a dozen kisses, in fact. She blows a dozen of him and slips them into his pocket. She tells him that if he's ever worried, "take a kiss from your pocket and imagine I am with you." Sure enough, there are times that Digby feels nervous and worried that day. But when he reaches from one of those kisses, it reassures him, and he realizes that he knows what to do.
The illustrations are charming and playful. There's some fun things to look at, particularly during the scene when the various animal characters are all having their lunch. And the ending of the book is delightful.

The Cat Next Door (Elizabeth Koda-Callan's Magic Charm Books) Review

The Cat Next Door (Elizabeth Koda-Callan's Magic Charm Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Elizabeth Koda-Callan is a designer, illustrator, and best-selling children's book author. She lives in New York City with her cat named Cinnamon. She has beautifully illustrated a story of a little girl who's dream comes true. On the front cover, a silver cat charm is worn on a silver chain by "the little girl." This charm is real and can be removed.
My nieces have two adorable kittens and we all love cats, so we enjoy reading books about cats, cats and more cats. I found this book was an excellent way to teach young girls the responsibility of taking care of a cat or kittens.
"The little girl" in the story is given the responsibility of looking after her neighbours cat. Soon she learns that cats don't come when called. She has to develop a certain degree of patience in order to wait for the silver tabby named Clover to learn to like her. She discovers that cats love to chase things and soon she and Clover are the best of friends.
At the end of the story, "the little girl" finds that her patience pays off. When she returns to see Clover and bring her a gift, Clover in fact has a gift for "the little girl." I loved this book because it teaches and entertains.

The Dot (Irma S and James H Black Honor for Excellence in Children's Literature (Awards)) Review

The Dot (Irma S and James H Black Honor for Excellence in Children's Literature (Awards))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book was delivered automatically in our Junior Library Guild order, and it has become one of my all-time favorites as a librarian.
When Vashti angrily stabs a dot onto an empty art class assignment, her teacher wisely follows through with a lesson in life by framing her dot for all to see.
This little bit of attention takes Vashti to new heights by allowing her to take that dot and see where it leads her. She paints all sorts of dots and gains new confidence.
What the story really teaches us is to try, and to start with the tiniest of dots to begin our journeys. As my library class discussed the theme, many of the kids brought up "dots" in their own lives, such as learning how to roller skate, sink a free-throw, or turn a cartwheel. We all have to start somewhere!
And as Vashti's teacher told her when she finished that first dot, "Sign it!"
This little book is truly an inspiration, and the kids loved it. I want my own copy!

Sally Jean, the Bicycle Queen

This is my 3 year-old's current favorite - it's got it all: Bike riding action, singing (we made up tunes to the rhymes), construction, drama...sharing. Lots of fun; it's the most requested bedtime reading, by far. We originally got it from the library, but have decided to invest in a copy of our own. If your child is a bike-riding fan, this book is a must-have.

Like one of the other reviewers of this series of books, I found that my dyslexic daughter was not particularly interested in my telling her stories about "famous dyslexics" or in having any kind of dialogue about the issue (she's 8 yrs old). However, she absolutely LOVED these books. They are non-threatening, not too "teachy", and the illustrations are wonderful. My daughter has enjoyed the entire series, but after reading this book in particular, she decided she wanted to go to the library (like the main character)and do some research on dyslexia. This is a huge step!
This is the only book in the series that specifically mentions a term - dyslexia. The other books deal more in generalities--trouble with timed math facts and memorization, poor handwriting and attention deficit. However, I think many children will see themselves in at least one of these stories, and a child like mine may see parts of herself (or himself) in every book. I like the fact that the books are non-specific. They don't spend word space on labels and diagnoses and symptomology. They simply discuss the challenges a child faces in the classroom from a child's point of view. And THAT is what makes them so accessible and wonderful for our kids. I highly, highly recommend this entire series of books for any child with learning differences.

My son received all the books in this series for Christmas. He loved them so much. I searched for the right book to give him for a few months, and I am so glad I picked these. He really seemed to connect with them. I think he is so used to everything being so formal when it comes to myself and his teachers talking about the way he learns. These are the first books that took him to a place all to himself, a place where he could connect as a kid. I love these books, and if you have a child with a different learning style these are the books for them!

You would have thought that telling my child over and over (and over!)again that other children, and me his mother, have the same struggles with learning math would have made him feel a little less alone in the 3rd grade math world, but it didn't. A parent can only tell a child that everyone learns differently so much. After my son read this book he finally believed me! We talked about how I was when I was a child and how I even have struggle now. Reading this book has opened up this connection with my son that i never thought possible. He saw himself in this book; he made connections that finally turned the switch on for him. Thank you Barb for thinking of our children and creating these great books!

Beauty's Secret: A Girl's Discovery of Inner Beauty (Heartlight Girls Series Book 1) Review

Beauty's Secret: A Girl's Discovery of Inner Beauty (Heartlight Girls Series Book 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently had the opportunity to review the book, Beauty's Secret: A Girls Discovery of Inner Beauty, by Debra Gano, Illustrated by Dawn Pitre. This book is in the genre of, Juvenile Fiction and Juvenile Self-Esteem, and written for girls in the 7 -14 age group. Its retail price is $17.95 and it may be found at [...], most major bookstores nationwide, and of course Amazon.com.
When there are so many books lining the bookstores and newsstand shelves, trying to capture the pre-teen, tween, and teen girl's attention, I find this book to be refreshing. Although written in an easily understood juvenile format, I found this book to be a great help for anyone facing the everyday struggles we sometimes deal with in today's society. Between peer pressure, the media, and the internet, girls are often overwhelmed by images that are not always positive or appropriate.
This book is the first in a series entitled The Heartlight Girls Series, written by [...], a former international model/actress and now CEO/Founder of Heartlight Girls. Debra is a national speaker on self-esteem and inner beauty and has now turned her attention to young girls and their inherent self-esteem issues.
Being the first in the series, this book has already won several awards including:
*Mom's Choice Award 2009 Gold Recipient
*USA Book News "National Best Books" 2008 First Place Winner Children's Fiction
*COVR Visionary Award's Best Children's Book of the Year 2008
*Moonbeam Children's Book Awards 2008 Silver Medal Winner
The book follows the title character Beauty, from birth to 16 years of age. Over a total of seven chapters, Beauty experiences insecurities about her appearance, enters a "beauty" contest and finds out about true beauty. I think any young girl would find this book interesting and comforting. It will teach them about self-esteem, friends, and insecurities. I would recommend this book to any parent of a young girl from the age of seven to fifteen. If there is a young girl in your life who you cannot get entice to talk about her feelings or concerns, this book would be a great conversation starter for the two of you. I highly recommend this book because, even though I am an adult, it also reminded me of what is important in life in general. Life sometimes gets in the way as adults and we can sometimes forget that we need to look within. My favorite quote from the book is by poet Khalil Gibran and reads, "Beauty is not in the face. Beauty is a light in the heart." Oh, one last beautiful thing, Heartlight Girls donates a portion of book
sales to organizations that support the empowerment of girls.
I would like to thank the author, Debra Gano first for writing such a beautiful book and secondly for providing a copy of the book for review.

If you're looking for a book full of motivatoin and encouragement, "The Silver Slippers" is the perfect choice. This book tells the story of a little girl who loved to dance, but never put her whole heart into it, until one day when the right motivation came along. In her class, they were to have a recital. This made the little girl glow with excitement. When she learned that the best ballerina in the class would be rewarded with being able to be the "Prima Ballerina." For the following weeks up until the recital, the little girl practiced and practiced, trying to perfect her ballet. While her friends did lived thier normal every day lives, the little girl stayed inside and worked extrememly hard. Sometimes the little girl would get down because of how long it was taking to get it right, so her mother got her a pair of silver slippers to hang around her neck. Every time the little girl danced, she wore the slippers as a reminder of the hard work she had done. When the time came to find out who the "Prima ballerina" was, the little girl became very nervous. But not for long, as she found out she got to be the star of the recital. The night came and as the girl got nervous, she looked at the slippers around her neck and took a step out on stage. Her performance was flawless. A true reward for her hard work. This book shows the determination of one little girl, and the reward she got from hard work. It is the perfect book for a bit of encouragement and motivation. Every child should have a copy of "The Silver Slippers."

Big Bug Surprise Review

Big Bug Surprise
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Prunella, the protagonist of Julia Gran's compelling Big Bug Surprise is from her antennae like braids and big bug eyes down to her black and yellow bee's knees stockings, all bug. In case the reader missed the point, Gran gives us a look at her room which among other bug wonders contains an ant farm, a bee clock and mobile, a poster of a wasp ala da Vinci, and a grasshopper sculpture of The Thinker that would have made Rodin proud. The one fly in the ointment however is Prunella's total inability to interest the adult world in her bug universe. Neither her parents, the school bus driver, nor her teacher at school have any time for Prunella's passion. Her entreaties to peak their curiosity all end with the grown up intoning, " Not now, Prunella". She on the other hand persists and when it is "show and tell" day at school it is as predictable as ants at a picnic what life form she'll bring.
The members of the supporting cast in this small volume could each be the protagonist of her own book. Ms. Mantis the school teacher is all pointy elbows and nose to go along with her nettlesome personality. The bees in the story are always smiling and seem quite contented with their sweet centered existence. A wonderful spider who appears on each page is Prunella's trusty side kick much as Beaker is with his muppet pal Dr. Bunsen Honeydew.
The action virtually bounces off the pages of this fine tightly woven tale whose moral is the benefit of following one's own bliss. But don't expect me to reveal any more or what the big bug surprise might be. Go get your own copy but please, don't bug me.

Prunella loves bugs. She's always eager to share her bug knowledge, even if others don't always want to listen. So she's aflutter to shine the spotlight on one of her favorite bugs at show-and-tell. On the big day, though, Prunella's plan is squashed when a swarm of bees invades her classroom! Luckily, Prunella has an idea. And like a true queen, she leads the bees safely to a new hive. Her teacher is impressed! Her classmates cheer! But what does Prunella do? She shares more bug facts, of course, and her audience couldn't beeeee more delighted.

I read this book with my three year old. The pictures are bright and look just like the characters on t.v. The storyline is entertaining, however I found that it tends to teach your child to give up if you can't do it right and to stick to something you know. I love the Big Comfy Couch but would prefer a story that encourages Loonette to keep trying.
