Del has decided that she can no longer live the life she?s known for so long. She has decided to change identities, sell what she can, put the rest in the truck of an old Datsun, and move out of town.
On the way out of LA, she encounters a four-hour traffic jam. At first she?s angry about her situation and scared that a cop will recognize that she?s a minor and send her back to foster care; as time goes on, however, the traffic jam becomes a message to her about people, and her view of the world is slightly softened. Del is able to imagine the lives of her fellow ?traffic-jammers,? and she can see what they need and who they really are. These insights help her reach an understanding of her own life.
Paul Fleischman is the master of taking seemingly insignificant characters and events and creating powerful relationships among them. Just as he did in Seedfolks, here he has written about common place people who come together unexpectedly and learn a little bit more about each other than they expected.
There is a protagonist here who is in need of hope and understanding, and she gets it surprisingly from strangers who don?t know that they?re offering her anything except a little conversation during a long wait.
The interviewer?a young man working on his thesis?shows Del how people grow and change even over short periods of time, and the man with the red beret gives her a glint of hope that she is clever and has talent.
The flashback between her present self and this traffic jam experience eight years prior offers the reader relief, knowing that she is, indeed, able to take this experience and her life and make something of it.

Wrestling isn't just a sport to Bobby Zane and Ivan Korske. It's a way of life. From the midnight runs to the cutting weight to plotting maneuvers in their sleep, wrestling is all they think about during the winter sports season. Both compete in the 129-pound weight class, and both refuse to let anything stand in the way of the state championship title.
Beyond their mutual love of wrestling, however, Bobby and Ivan couldn't be more different. Bobby's school wrestling team is known throughout New Jersey for its winning record. His family, though rich, is troubled by his mother's long working hours and his father's infidelity, and news that Bobby's girlfriend might be pregnant leaves Bobby wondering exactly where his life is headed.
Meanwhile, Ivan and his small-town farming father are grieving his mother, who was a strong influence in both their lives, and Ivan's anger and loss are felt by everyone except for his neighbor Shelley, who encourages Ivan's talents. Ivan's only hope of leaving his backwater town of Lemmings is a scholarship to Western Arizona University, but his father wants him to attend college close to home.
Each chapter alternates a point of view, taking the reader through both Bobby's and Ivan's journeys to the state championship. Alfred C. Martino, a wrestling fan, brings the excitement of their matches into the story. Both characters have depth and devotion to the people they love, even though their commitment to wrestling sometimes eats away at their relationships. Reading this book will make you think twice about the dumb jock stereotype.

Simeon's Gift Review

Simeon's Gift

The imprint of the 'umbrella' under which this beautiful book was published, "Words, Wisdom and Wonder", fits it all the way. It is a beautiful story, wonderfully told and handsomely illustrated. I'll not retell it here. The editorials have already done that. I would say simply, that Simeon's story belongs in every household that has a child to be enwrapped by it and in any other household that appreciates good things. The book "Simeon's Gift" is definitely one of those 'good things'. I'm a grandmother, with grown grandchildren now...but I got the book for myself and find it a sheer delight to look at and to read. The CD that comes with it is a supersized bonus. Read so clearly and beautifully by Dame Julie and acompanied by lovely and appropriate music, it's a joy to listen to. Thank you Julie! I highly recommend it.

Bravery Soup Review

Everyone needs a little encouragement from time to time, and that's exactly what young hearts will find in this tale of Carlin, a timid racoon, who is skittish about everything - trying new things, sounds in the night, and even his own shadow.
Fortunately, Carlin has a good friend, Zack, who takes the cowering creature to Big Bear, "the bravest animal in all the land." Big Bear tells Carlin that the soup he is preparing, Bravery Soup, will banish all fears. Problem is, one extremely important ingredient is missing and Carlin must go after it.
Poor shuddering Carlin, he "must go alone through the Forbidden Forest to Skulk Mountain," and then into a cave in which a box is hidden. With knees shaking and lips trembling Carlin sets out.
The little fellow learns many important lessons along the way, and so will all who read this reassuring tale.

Deep
By: Susanna VancePicture this, a beautiful island known as a Cook Island named Calista. Its small, only a 30 minute walk all the way around, not even big enough to be found on a map. In the middle, off the ocean shore, is a dense forest. It's the place you read about in fairy tales, where the sun always rises and sets perfectly. The only problem is that a mysterious man who thinks he is in charge of everything owns it, but could that really ruin it all?
Ask a 13-year-old red head named Birdwinkle Sidwell or Birdie. Follow her as she takes you on an adventure you will never forget, that all begins when she travels to the Caribbean for one year of her life. Birdie is a normal teenage girl who wants to be an author but has a problem. Nothing amazingly interesting has ever happened to her so she has nothing to fill the pages of her book with. She wishes for something more exciting, something bigger, something to make a best seller and all of that comes true in an unexpected way.
Morgan Bera was born to the one true thing she loves, the endless sea. She fears land and what it seems to do to the people who live on it or even visit it. Morgan's strength and courage is the only thing keeping her going in life. After Morgan and her parents go their separate ways she is in search of someone to give her "official" papers so her beloved Svanhild would finally become hers, but her sense of ocean laws leads her on an adventure that will change her life forever.
Nicholas the Australian shows you the true meaning of a man with two faces. Is that sweet man really a fake though or is it all just your imagination. I mean, isn't he just an innocent Australian man that had the misfortune of some terrible accident? Judge for yourself as his character unravels before your eyes.
What about that popular girl though? That always seems to have her life together. What is her life really about? Well she gets Nudelized into this perfect little princess by her mom and the evil man himself. She tries to hold on to her true self and tries to stay the person that was once Birdie's best friend but will she?
The author, Susanna Vance's writing style captivates your attention throughout every page. Getting inside Birdie and Morgan's heads (as they switch off narrating the story) allows your emotions to change as well as your opinion about Nicholas's true heart to change as theirs do. The book places you on the island as well not watching form afar.
This book is not only about a struggle to survive but also a struggle to hang onto yourself and your character. As unsuspecting victim's lives get turned upside down what happens to them and does the duck ever drown?
Deep really keeps you thinking about tomorrow and what it brings. It is definitely a page-turner that teaches you the true importance of life and everything else. Be careful what you wish for, it just might come true in an unexpected way!

It's has been very difficult trying to find books for my twin 8yr old daughters.
I wanted a series of books with the star character being an African American girl just having fun and doing kid stuff. A book that will make them know that reading is fun. This book does just that and more.
If you're looking for a great chapter book for an African American girl, then author Ann Cameron's "Gloria Rising" and "Gloria's Way" is it.
Also, try Valerie Wilson Wesley's series of "Willimena Rules".

Tom Tin's family is in debt. His father, a sailor has been taken away to a debtors prison. If that's not bad enough Tom got framed as a theif. His sentence is six I forget how many years on a slave ship. All that's on Tom's mind is escape.
This book can be read by a child. I don't see why people think it's for young adults. I didn't have any trouble with it.
Forgot to mention that every character throughout the book has been interesting. A great twist at the end with the character "The Smasher". This was a very enjoyable read.

One of the things I liked best about the book was the gradual development of Chrissa's character. Her motives were conflicted, as in real life, but minor triumphs gradually blossomed into real convictions and abilities.
I also enjoyed the boy-girl sub-plot. It is nice to see teens becoming friends before they get involved in a boy-girl relationship.
All in all, this was a very enjoyable book to read.

Andiamo, Weasel Review

Andiamo, Weasel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the rolling Tuscan countryside a piccola crow goes into business with a wily weasel. And therein begins the story of Andiamo, Weasel! by Rose Marie Grant and illustrated by Jon Goodell, ($15.95 Alfred A. Knopf.)
This charmingly illustrated children's book is perfect for youngsters of all ages, meaning the grown-ups who read it to the children will enjoy the tale and the telling as much as the little ones. Grown ups reading aloud may even break in to the song "Funiculi, funicula!" more than once!
Youngsters accustomed to hearing parents and grandparents split their speech with words from the old country will feel right at home in this fable. Consider that all the speaking parts in this fable belong to the animals, and they all live in Italy, of course, they'll sprinkle their exchanges with a bit of Italian. (Won't the grown ups delight in translating for the little ones!)
Even the rooster, who only has one word says it in Italian, "Chicchirichi!" Frankly, we've never heard a rooster crow in another language, but if they did, we're sure this is how they'd sound in Italian. (It's that willing-suspension-of-disbelief-thing, we ARE talking about a fable here!) But the best part of that rooster's cameo word is hearing Mom or Dad or a grandparent bringing the word to life, or life to the word and lighting up a child's face.
As the glossary at end of Andiamo, Weasel! explains, piccola is small. So the crow is small and needs the help of the weasel, who ends up being prodded by the title (Andiamo, Weasel!) and rarely succumbs to work after the corn crop is sown while they merrily sing "Funiculi, funicula!"
This fable works on many levels, one of which for the children reading it is to learn that hard work will be rewarded, and that even though they might be small, or piccola, they probably are much stronger than they realize and should stand up for what's right.
As interesting and fun as is the story, I could see reading this aloud and pausing to point out the rich detail capturing the Tuscan farm country. The piccolo crow wears a flower in her straw hat; the weasel wears a neckerchief (as if he could just as easily hold up the next stage coach!) that he later wears around his broken leg when there is work to be done. In the menacing rain corn husks like vipers whirl in the wind under dark clouds.
The piccolo crow enlists the help of a wolf to frighten the weasel into doing the right thing. The wolf could have been drawn to be more scary and imposing a figure - but let's not upset the friends of the wolves in the world. And the tenor frightened off the bandstand by the piccolo crow - why was he a fat, balding man with a handlebar mustache? Ooh fah!
But these minor points are no reason that you shouldn't run out now and buy a copy of Andiamo, Weasel! for every tot you know, from 1 to 101 years old. It's the stuff of which memories are made.

Foundling (Monster Blood Tattoo, Book 1) Review

Foundling (Monster Blood Tattoo, Book 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Monster Blood Tattoo: Foundling" is being pushed by its publishers as a great original: "fantastical without conforming to the generally accepted notions of fantasy" (by which they mean that it isn't peopled by wizards and unicorns living in a vaguely European, mock-medieval setting.) The book certainly achieves this goal, although fantasy readers will probably take offense at the insinuation that the genre has nothing but princesses and dragons to offer. Even if this isn't the first fantasy world you encounter with "tri-corner hats and flintlock pistols", there is no denying Cornish's originality. The Half-Continent is a world at war: humans and monsters have been fighting for centuries. Biotechnology supplies light, engine power and even, in some cases, superhuman powers. Our hero, Rossamund, leaves the protected, if not fully comfortable, world of the orphanage where he was raised to start a career as a lamplighter outside the city walls. Early in his travels he is diverted from his true path and we discover the Half-Continent and its inhabitants through his adventures. The world is rendered with thoughtful and convincing detail, complemented by the author's own illustrations and an extensive set of appendices (the "Explicarium".)
In truth, "Foundling" is more of a first act than a first book: characters are introduced, mysteries are suggested, the scene is set; but the arc is not complete. I, for one, eagerly await, Act II.

See You at the Top: 25th Anniversary Edition Review

See You at the Top: 25th Anniversary Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Recommend this to everyone ~ it will help motivate you to reach your goals.
The premise is simple: We all hold the keys to our own success, and we deserve it. It is not accidental but deliberate and takes hard work.
1) Success starts with self-image because you are the only one who can make that possible. Before you convince anyone else, you have to convince yourself.
2) Successful people are ¡°Good Finders¡±; they look for the good in other people. ¡°You can have anything in your life, if you help others get what they want¡±. (page 57)
3) No goals = no game. Activity is not accomplishment. Don¡¯t be a wandering generality. Goals should be big, long range, daily and specific.
4) Unlimited possibilities. Records were meant to be broken. Until Roger Bannister ran the four-minute mile, most thought it was physically impossible. After his achievement, people broke the record constantly.
5) Work as a team. There is a limit to what you can accomplish by yourself. Example: Geese fly 72% farther by flying together.
6) Attitude is everything. It determines the outcome. While you cannot control the environment, you (and only you) can control your attitude. The pessimist says. ¡°I will believe it when I see it.¡± The optimist says, ¡°I will see it when I believe it.¡± (page 206)
7) Create good habits because habits define our lives. Example: The average teenage student watches 17,000 hours of television before they graduate high school.
8) Successful people enjoy their work.
9) Keep going. "The price of success is less than the price of failure". (page 33)

What a great book. I bought it to read to my 4 year old daughter after seeing The Nutcracker Ballet & this book far exceeded my hopes. It was very fun for my daughter to open an envelope on each page with cute little notes in each (some from the Sugar Plum Fairy!). It clearly conveys the message that if you believe in your self, you can achieve anything. And at the end, it really hit it out of the park when the final little note card included a ballet charm bracelet!
I just loved it & so did my daughter. I want to order it for all the little girls we know. It's a fun one.

Immediate, poetic & bright this big book brings you up close & personal with children's feet, hands, eyes, backs, hair, elbows in award-winning Wendy Ewald's magical photos.
The poems penned by these 15 youngsters are funny & eloquent, touching & proud. As is usual with children, it's more about what they don't say as much as it is about what they do.
Bound to get kids thinking about what they like about their bodies, might even get them writing little ditties about it too! A must in a classroom or school library!
The poems & black & white photos in THE BEST PART OF ME are drawn from Literacy Through Photography, a program Wendy Ewald originated in the public schools of Durham, North Carolina.
